re: Have Vets always been a rip off?

City vet has to take extra steps that may not be "necessary" to cover his arse so he has something to fall back on if something goes wrong during the procedure on someones teacup shitsu and he gets slapped with a lawsuit. Country vet knows that rancher Bob understands that sometimes things shite happens, and isn't going to be quick to lawyer up.

someone is triggered. I was bitching because I have 2 vets tell me it’s not necessary it’s just an easy way for vets to make additional money.
One of them is your dad's friend who is "well respected" and runs blood tests too.

Exactly but he’s is honest with me and says it’s just because he can make some more money off the test and a CYA. I just said it needs to be optional and sign something declining the blood work.
I mean I don’t blame them I would want to get mine too if I payed that much for a degree but it should be optional.

If the business owner and vet decides it isn’t optional then it’s your prerogative to take you pet elsewhere. Most vets have a standard of care they aren’t willing to compromise whether you agree or not.
Not a single person goes into that industry to make money. Very few make enough money to justify all the schooling and being in an industry with the highest suicide rate.

what should be optional? the whole fricking procedure is optional you dumb shite. No one is making you get your dog neutered.
and you can't even allege that they tried to rip you off. Doing/offering one procedure/serivce that another provider does not, does not make that service a rip off.
Posted on 8/22/18 at 2:07 pm to al_cajun
$500 for a neutering isn't bad. Would you rather your dog live after the simple procedure or possibly die of an infection from a cheaply done job without blood tests?

It's part of the procedure that the vet thinks you need to follow. How is that optional?
That's like me telling one of my tax clients, hey, you need to bring me all of your W-2s, but if you want, only bring half of them and sign this form declining to bring the rest.
No one is going to offer that.
My vet in NOLA is great. Any time the dog goes under, they do blood work. End of story. She thinks its necessary and won't administer anesthesia without knowing that there aren't any issues showing up in the blood work. I respect that. Maybe it's overkill, but who cares?

I always laugh at people who think vets are rolling in money. It’s super hard work for not a ton of financial payoff.
Equine surgeons at huge clinics that see a lot of racing injuries, those can make a ton. Your everyday vet? They do it because they love it.
As you of all people well know. Say hi to your vet for me
Posted on 8/22/18 at 3:01 pm to al_cajun
It's like $45 at AVS in Baton Rouge.
Posted on 8/22/18 at 3:48 pm to Aspercel
Yeah the equine and specialized vets can make a living but you gotta be in the right areas.
Now you want to know where people make money in the pet industry right now? Boarding and daycare.

One thing you clearly are not aware of is that vets standard of care varies based on location. Meaning a vet in a metropolitan area has to practice a higher level of medicine than one in a rural area.
Example.... country vet skips pre op lab work, dog had a liver shunt that would have been obvious w labs, dog dies under anesthesia. If pre op labs are not routinely offered in the geographical area that this occurs then that vet is not guilty of malpractice- just bad luck for the pup.
If a city vet skips the pre op labs where all of the local competition requires them then that vet can be sued for malpractice.
Standard of care in vet med is assessed on a sliding scale based on how most vets in the area practice.
Your city vet could probably get by with signed papers saying he won’t be found negligent if something happens but doesn’t entertain this idea because he is ok to just lose you as a client.

They’re not scamming you. Vet degrees are expensive, and I bet lease is expensive, too.
Vets aren't regulated are they?
Posted on 8/22/18 at 3:55 pm to purpgoldblood
And yes vet school costs over $200k and most “city vets” likely have around a half mil worth of equipment
Country vets have far less
I would also bet the country vet doesn’t not place an IV catheter(one of the most important steps in anesthesia safety), probably doesn’t intubate, and probably uses poor pain control.
But if none of that matters to you drive to the country or find a really cheap city vet- I promise they’re out there
If you don’t care about what you eat, eat McDonald’s, but don’t go to Ruth’s Chris and complain about the price

I think they are actually just hurting for business. There is a damn vet on every corner.
Posted on 8/22/18 at 5:27 pm to Aspercel
Husband of a Vet here and early on they don't make much for the amount they work and the debt load they have to incur to get the DVM.
The big difference is the older generation of Vets that finished school with little to no debt that can charge low low prices for services while the newer generation has to pay for large amounts of student loans. Also, there are the big corporations like Mars, bullying their way into the market.
My wife owns her own clinic now, but has to pay for the business loan (10 yr note) and the building loan (15 yr note), plus employees (2 fresh out of school Vets and another 8-10 in staff). So on top of her business overhead, there is the 6 figures in student loans. But people continue to think that Vets are swimming in the money straight out of school.

People are fricking idiots

quote:that still doesn't take away that it is a scam. Why are the city vets wanting to run lab tests when op just wants their pets dick/puss cut off? That is the scam part, the unnecessary bullshite that is, quote mode, needed, end quote mode.
Professional services are more expensive in a big city than they are in the country? Who knew?

It’s not unnecessary. You just don’t agree with it. You don’t have to go to that vet. You also don’t have to get that pet fixed. You also don’t have to own a pet.
Believe it or not but most vets go into practice because they genuinely care for animals. If it was such a scam and so fricking lucrative my arse would be fishing and jodying all day long instead of working my arse off everyday alongside my wife who I promise works longer hours than 90% of this board.
