re: Have Vets always been a rip off?

I would not consider a single one of them to be wealthy. Most of them take home, after paying their expenses and their staff, somewhere between 70K and 100K. This is before paying off any student loans (for those that still have them). The vet that is a friend graduated vet school with over 200K in student loan debt (just from vet school).
Yeah it's pretty shocking how little vets make. I always thought they made 200k or so until my sister went to vet school.
I will say the nice thing about MSU's vet school is you will "only" end up with about 80k debt. That's pretty good for the quality of vet school they have. There were other ones she got into where she would have been 200k in debt like your friend.

They quoted me $500, which is just crazy, said they needed to run a whole bunch of blood test. I called up a country vet 45 minutes outside of town and it was $350 cheaper than any vet in the Houston area that I called.
If only people put this much thought into their own healthcare costs, our insurance system wouldn't be such a joke.

My FiL's brother is a horse vet and he's the nicest country vet you could ever imagine. He drives all over the south..goes to the source many times to take care of the horses.
He's told me so many sad stories of people too poor to pay for the treatment of their animals (let alone affording a horse in the first place) and he has waived his fees more times than you can imagine.
in short, he is by no means a rich man even though he is a very well respected vet.

I got to Hillsboro Animal Hospital. Really like Dr. Givens even though he's an Auburn guy.
He used to work on big cats and exotic animals, and he's an amateur beer league hockey player. And a great vet. And they're open on Saturdays, which is huge for us.
I have recommended him to everyone and everyone loves him.

Going to college and vet school costs over 100k plus the opportunity costs of 210 k on the low end, real estate plus office construction or rent, insurance payroll, phone .electricity, etc. before you clear a dime. If it such a gold mine why don’t more people do it?

Yeah I am sure there are some vets in large cities that make a ton of money but for the most part vets are definitely not in it for the money.
It's expensive to take care of a living creature.

What’s hard to understand about that. A flea collar is a whole lot different.

Why because I do my research and call a person who runs a very successful veterinary practice and ask him what’s necessary and what isn’t?

Yes price was slightly different in the city for surgery itself but majority of additional cost came from $300 in unnecessary blood test that the country vet said are not needed
you know how fricking stupid you sound? You got two different proposals and two different prices. One offered less services and charged less. You apparently chose the cheaper option. Yet you still bitch about a "rip off". But you paid exactly what you wanted to. So how were you ripped off?
That blood work that is deemed unnecessary is standard procedure for THAT PARTICULAR CLINIC. They don't all operate the same on every single level.
Has the country vet done the procedure? Is the dog well? Cause I promise you if the dog gets an infection or dies under anesthesia, you'll be bitching about how this quack killed your dog. Or about the cost of the meds for the subsequent complications shoud they arise.
People like you really do suck at life. Instead of being happy you found a clinician who fit your (cheap arse) price range, you want to bitch about a DVM who seemingly offers a more complete set of services and charges accordingly.
guess your next thread will be bitching about what a rip off a BMW is compared to a Chevy Malibu.

There is a low cost spay/neuter service we use here in dfw for all our dogs. Just a few hundred to get the nards lopped off.

I have an uncle that goes to the vet to get a shot of penicillin whenever he's sick. Says it's much cheaper than seeing a doctor.

You’d be surprised what pre-anesthetic bloodwork may show on a somewhat healthy dog prior to surgery and the risks even for just a routine surgery. Some places may charge more than others because of corporate bs, but not every vet is trying to rip you off. They are doing what they believe is the standard of care. You get what you pay for.

someone is triggered. I was bitching because I have 2 vets tell me it’s not necessary it’s just an easy way for vets to make additional money.
Posted on 8/22/18 at 12:50 pm to al_cajun
You sound like the type of person who would turn around and sue the vet if your dog died because they didn't run "unnecessary bloodwork".
Posted on 8/22/18 at 12:54 pm to caro81
do you not read entire threads? I said I would like the option to sign paperwork stating I didn’t want it. In fact my old vet in BR did this at Garden District.

And that’s not the case. But think what you want

no, its not. That blood work costs money to run. If I had to guess, I'd say the "unnecessary" blood work is standard for that DVM as he has to cover his arse on a malpractice suit should something bad happen. A lot of the procedures performed are to comply with insurance requirements or practice standards.
Its not like hes recommending a shampoo treatment or certain supplement that isn't necessary.
The fact that you don't understand the difference between one course of treatment and another- and the price difference between the two is puzzling. The fact that you feel ripped off when you didn't pay for anything offered is really puzzling.

my dads neighbor said he could take care of that for him.... he ties it up on a board and just cuts it.....no sutures and he says it heals up nicely...most of the time, females too.
I hope this isn't happening because it's quite illegal. Would be charged for cruelty to animals and practicing veterinary medicine without a license.
