I got my dog neutered last week and called my regular vet in Houston to get a quote. They quoted me $500, which is just crazy, said they needed to run a whole bunch of blood test. I called up a country vet 45 minutes outside of town and it was $350 cheaper than any vet in the Houston area that I called. These damn vets are just scamming people out money. I guess they have been taking notes on the American Health care system. Has it always been like this or a recent development?

ETA: Majority of the cost difference came from $300 of blood test not the surgery

Professional services are more expensive in a big city than they are in the country? Who knew?

They are doctors who treat patients who can't explain what hurts. Should they work for minimum wage?

Maybe the vet in Houston is a vastly superior doctor and charges what he knows he's worth

Country vets are generally much cheaper than city vets, and they tend to be really good vets. I do use Highland Park Veterinary Hospital on occasion.

Says the person who thinks some services are a ripoff if they're more expensive in a large city than they are in the county.

Yes price was slightly different in the city for surgery itself but majority of additional cost came from $300 in unnecessary blood test that the country vet said are not needed.

I thought we were gonna talk about sports cars or at least the VA system. What a disappointment.

He’s probably selling the penises to Asia to make up the difference.

They were reasonable in the 80's. Now they are ridiculous.

Would you go to a "country doctor" for a vasectomy?

Do it yourself and save all the costs. It's really not that hard.

That's the country vet's opinion. Many vets disagree. Having a blood test done can uncover any potential problems with anesthesia. They're a small risk, but a risk nonetheless.

ETA - Pre op blood work is a point of debate among vets. You found one that didn't think it was necessary. Many believe it is worth it. It doesn't mean it's a rip off.

Vets are underpaid and their employees even more so.

If you can’t handle their upkeep and vet fees, don’t get pets.
