I always say it pronounced A-meet but I heard somebody say pronounced A-mit. What is the correct way to say it?

A lot of old folks, my Dad included, say "A-mitt." Us younger folks say "A-meet."

I call the town A-meet and the river A-mit.

A-meet?
As in “Anything east of the A-Meet is southern Mississippi.”

A-meet is how people in Lousiana pronounce the little town where Saban steals football players.
A-mit is a county in Mississippi just north of A-meet.
Both are fine.

You from Mississippi or Louisiana?

Born and raised there. A-mit for us old folks, A-meet for the younger generation.

This is correct. I grew up saying A-mit, now I say A-meet.
