We live around the Amite and it everyone pronounces it A-meet. However, there is also a smaller river called the Petite Amite.

We all know how to pronounce Petite, right?

Looks like Petite and Amite ought to rhyme but nope. Its pronounced as the "Petty Amite" river.

This. My family has been in the area since 1821 and i never heard anything but A-mitt until 15-20 years ago.

That’s because idiots are pronouncing it. Kinda like people around here pronouncing yearling as yurlin.

As someone who went to school in that area, can honestly say I’ve never heard it called a-mit.

This was around 20 years ago.

Nash Roberts always said A-meet on the weather...that's how I pronounce it, my wife (Mississippi girl) says A-mit

For some reason it was a-mit when I was a kid in the 80's and then slowly it became A-meet.
