My German Shepherd snaps at my son sometimes because he's pulling his tail or trying to ride him. Never hard enough to draw blood but hard to enough to say, leave me alone you little shite.

He'd still protect my son if someone wanted to harm him.

Had a little mixed breed do that.

What resulted was retraining for the dog and retraining for the kid in how to act around the dog.

The dog in question being a rescue which we suspect had been abused contributed to the issue.

It is ALL about the breed

A scientific journal just published the most common breeds responsible for biting kids

Pits and German Shepherds top the list. By far.

Boxer snapped once at my wife and once at one of my daughters. Both times when they tried to move him while he was sound asleep. He got yelled at and his arse swatted a little. He hasn’t snapped at anyone since and they haven’t fricked with him while he’s sleeping again. I figure it worked out for all parties.

I think most dogs in general will snap at anybody if you move their food bowl while they’re eating.

Anyone who keeps a dog that bites is completely irresponsible.
I agree I fool with them while they are eating to try and provoke them to bite. If it growls it will learn quick whos food it is.. if it bites one time well it won't bite again.

My cousins yellow lab put him in the hospital.

Ive seen Chihuahuas and Malteses that would have killed people if they were big enough.

Some dogs are more agressive than others. Its all anecdotal as long as humans are involved.

Our old lab nipped at my then two year old nephew one time. He was ordinarily very sweet natured but he was an alpha dog, elderly and a lil grouchy, and my nephew got too close. No harm done. The funny thing is he was also very protective of my nephew. He would lie down next to the bed when my nephew would take a nap, and stay there until he woke up.

Little dogs can have attitudes that would get them put down if they were big enough. You can't have a mean mastiff - you have to pull an Ol' Yeller on them, unfortunately.

Annoying to dangerous becomes logarithmic with weight.

One of my aunt's dobermans bit me when I was just old enough to remember it. He bit a couple of other people before they put him down. Every other time I was around him he was sweet, and seemed to enjoy me petting him.

I blamed him being bad on my relatives. They named him Satan. What did they expect?

Only time I've been bitten by a dog was a Chihuahua this summer on the back of my foot/achilles. Little bastard drew blood.

All dogs can snap, it depends on a situation.

First you have to find out why he snapped, did he get scared, frightened, 2 happy, protecting you, etc.

Then you can deal with it.

If it's a pit, best thing is 2 put it asleep immediately, even if it never bit anyone, it will kill some one, so stop the statistics.

Porter has bitten me and drawn blood several times. We play rough and those are the consequences.

We used to ride our bikes around our doberman in the back yard. She'd playfully snap at us, but never bite us. My mom would get mad at us for doing it, because the dobie loved to bite our shirttails and rip them. It was like she was showing us what she could do if she wanted to.

That was a great dog. The only other thing she ever did that made anyone mad was farting in the house.

When I was like 16, I was hunting with my uncle and a few of his friends. One of them had a chessie we were hunting with.

We were driving back to camp and I was riding on the open tailgate, dog was in the back too with all the ducks. Dog starts eating a duck, and thinking it was like our labs, I tried to stop him.

He got pissed, just missed my hand, and I had to jump from the truck to get away from him. Told my uncle about it. The owner started explaining the difference in a chessie and a lab. My uncle made it clear that if I had shot the dog, he would have backed me up.

I chalked it up to a chessie that didn’t know me sitting on a pile of ducks he had just retrieved. As a rule now, I just don’t go near a chessie I don’t know around dead ducks.
