It’s a suburban county south of Atlanta. It was 90% White in the 1980 census. Today, it’s 8% White and 69% Black. Talk about a hell of a change.

And is it better or worse for it?

Baton Rouge is facing a similar issue and it’s paying dearly

Wow. Didn’t expect to see this on the OT.

My parents lived in Clayton County when I was born. I went to kindergarten and through 2nd grade there. Dad worked for the state and mom was a teacher. I used to walk to school in the morning and played with the other little kids in my street. Idyllic 70’s ATL suburb. They bought their first house there and I found it on Zillow.

Now it’s a place that I wouldn’t drive through in the day time.

So sad…but a story that has been retold across the country.

The 96 Olympics changed that county. Atlanta pushed a ton of projects and section 8 housing into Clayton to try and clean Atlanta up. Clayton took tons of money in exchange and sold their soul. Similar stuff happened in Douglas County. Gwinnett has flipped a ton too but for different reasons

Clayton was always crummy, kind of like Kenner. It was never meant to be a high end area.

Counties in Texas? Seems weekly I see somewhere a Muslim has won an office or a place of importance. Georgia, too.

Is it a nice place you'd want to live?

There was a guy here who used to talk about how he lived on Lake Spivey. I would remind him that it was Clayton County, to which he said he lived on the Henry County side. Like that matters, there is NOTHING redeeming about that entire area.

It's crime-ridden. It's run down. It's just a dump. Anyone who lives there or adjacent to there is out of their mind.

you could probably find similar in just about any metro atlanta area, especially around gwinnett. Looking at a school demographic website, the year I graduated HS (in gwinnett) there were a little over 1200 whites and about 650 blacks. The 2024 data shows right at 1800 blacks and less than 100 (no, that is not a typo) whites.

Gwinnett county, and probably most suburbs within 20-30 minutes of 285 in all directions, barely resemble what they did 40 years ago.

EBR is more black than it was in 1980 but not anything nearly as dramatic. I think it’s like 15% more than what it was 50 years ago, which is not exactly life changing. The white share has fallen but that’s just about everywhere. We’ve gained a lot of Hispanics and Asians which is a good thing to help balance stuff out, IMO, and keep some neighborhoods from becoming completely uninhabitable. People are (for whatever screwed up reason) really wanting to be able to call it Jackson, but it’s just not the reality on the ground.

Don't know if the change is as notable, but take a look at Gwinnett County, GA from 2000 to 2020.

Have you been in Kenner Lately... There's gated subdivisions I bet you couldn't afford to live in...

I lived briefly in East Cobb in 2005. It was awesome. I know that’s 21 years ago. Last time I was there was 2016. It looked pretty much the same, but that was 10 years ago. Is this still the case nowadays or is it not as nice as it once was?

In the Archer Cluster, the standardized test scores have plummeted since we moved here in 2017, and the scores were one of the check boxes when choosing this house. The liberals say that's just because there are more children for whom English isn't their first language, but the education is still great for your smart little white child. OK, I do see a lot of hispanics around here. But when I get stuck behind a school bus around here, it ain't Hispanic kids I see getting off the bus.
