Happy 60th birthday to Butterbean

In the 90's, before UFC, we had this shite, and Butterbean was unstoppable. I think he did MMA later in his career, but his best days were as a 'toughman.'

If not for DDP Bean likely wouldn't be here for his 60th. One way or another, Butterbean wasn't long for this world. He was broken physically and mentally.

Butterbean making it to 60 has to be an all time upset. Up there with Keith Richards still kicking at 82.

A bit of Bogalusa trivia. Back in the day, Washington correctional institute, now known as Rayburn correctional, in north Washington parish had inmate boxing. This was around the same time the casinos came to the gulf coast, and brought boxing with it. One of the guards at Rayborn, terry wood, was a certified boxing referee, due to the State mandating a certified ref for the prison fights. Due to his certs he was one of the first refs to work the casino fights. Terry was always quick to jump in to stop the fight at the bell so some prison shite didn’t happen.
You all know terry as the ref who butterbean absolutely wrecked at the bell when he jumped in while bean was mid swing.
RIP Terry. Died of a heart attack way too young.

Loved him when I was in high school. Spent many Tuesday nights watching him on USA. Loved the way the “King of the Four Rounders” brought it. True patriot.

Can one of the boxing experts here why he never fought Tyson, Holyfield, or any of the other big name heavyweights of the 90s? You can say its because he wasn't up to their skill level but the ppv buys would have been off the charts. Butterbean vs Tyson would have easily set a ppv record.

Back in the late 1990's I was on stage with Butterbean at one of Anthony Cools hypnotist comedy shows at the Grand Casino in Gulfport. There are videos of this out there somewhere.

The guy was fun to watch and carved out a lucrative career in boxing for himself for what it's worth.
He had 91 pro bouts and went 77 (57KO's)----10 (2 by KO)----4.
Even though he was known as the King of the 4 Rounders, he did schedule 4 fights over that.
He had two 6 round fights with one going the distance and winning by stoppage in the other, an 8 rounder that he won in 2 by KO and his biggest opponent in a 10 rounder being Larry Holmes who beat Butterbean by decision.
I really find it amazing that he managed to go 10 rounds being the size he was at the time, weighing 334 lbs.
