(Bloomberg) -- Almost half of U.S. lumber dealers and manufacturers reported excess inventories last month, a sharp turnround from a few months ago, when supplies ran so low they sparked price surges. In July, 49% of building-material dealers and manufacturers said they had excess lumber capacity, while none described their levels as “very tight,” in a survey by John Burns Real Estate Consulting

Lumber prices have come down from records in May, when sawmills were caught off guard with low inventories amid a surge in home building and renovation. Producers have since increased output, and a shortage of other building supplies such as siding and windows has slowed the pace of construction.

Yea go buy windows right now and get back to me. Just got a quote on my house just the windows with no install and it was nearly $18K for 25 windows. On top of that, the lead time is 2 months.

I'm a glass fabricator. We don't do windows, but we do insulating units and heavy glass stuff like shower doors. We've never been busier. For now, glass supply is still stable. There are rumblings that it's about to get tight, but I've heard those rumblings for 16 months now.

Nah, the window issue is real. Lots of framed up houses in AP sitting at a standstill because no windows. Can't get the framing inspection finished until the windows show up.

Welp, there goes my weekend. I've been using lumber prices as an excuse to put off re-doing my boat dock.

Siding too. Try getting vinyl in any color other than brown or white and you are being told 6 to 8 weeks.

Other types of siding are getting hard to find as well. Hopefully, this doesn't lead to stucco making a big comeback on residential.

That’s cheap. I paid $1000/window for wood windows last year.

Lead time was ~6 months. Bought in March, installed in September. Relief Windows fwiw.

Actually, I think them buying heavy is why prices haven't dropped on the retail side as fast as they should. Some things have dropped but there is still a lot of material that is nowhere nearly as low as it should be yet.

Go buy some trim boards or crown molding right now. Hell, go check out the price on a basic 1x6 primed board people use for trim. It's all utterly insane.

It’s the entire reason. Still don’t care; that’s an hour glass short on sand. They can’t sit on it forever and the major players will force the losses by turning over their inventory to make way for the obligations that they already have in production.

$1000 installed for wood replacement windows is cheap, actually.

I was putting mid-grade vinyl windows because I plan on flipping this house soon. Keep in mind, that is not installed. The install will run another $7K.

The thought of replacing all the windows in my house makes my stomach hurt. I have 16 windows and two atrium doors just on the sun porch alone.

I keep reading this, but as I've mentioned before, supply didn't really seem to be the problem at just about all the places I've done business with over the past year. Both Lowe's and Home Depot stayed better stocked over the past year than I've seen in years. It wasn't just their normal inventory, either. Stuff I've never been able to find at Lowe's started showing up, like untreated 4×4s. Stuff they usually only carried some of was stacked to the rafters. Home Depot was more or less the same way. Both were still pulling and stacking contractor orders the whole time, too. The local mill/hardware store I do business with wasn't hit very bad, either, though it is harder to tell as they've given preference to builders more than individuals for years, but they still had most everything I went after.

I know it is anecdotal, but in my experience, supply wasn't the problem.
