I noticed some blood in his urine this weekend and he wasn't acting himself. They ran blood work and his kidneys were fine and no signs of a UTI but his white blood count was through the roof which is a sign of cancer. They're going to try to flush his kidneys for the next 3 or 4 days anyway to buy him a little time but it's probably fighting a losing battle. If this doesn't buy him a few months then I will probably have to put him down this week or very early next week as I am not going to be greedy and keep him around while he is suffering.

It sucks and his brother has been howling all morning looking for him which is killing me to listen to.

As you can tell he is a huge arse dog. He weighed 107 this morning and he hasn't really ate anything in 3 days. He was visibly skinnier already so I think he lost 7-8 pounds since Friday when I first noticed he wasn't acting normal.

Best of luck with the diagnosis and outcome. Had to leave a dog at the vet one weekend, don't think anyone in the house slept the entire weekend.

sorry to hear that man. When I was a new poster here this board helped me get over the loss of my beloved Deuce, who had died of a rare gastrointestinal disease. Similar symptoms, lots of blood in stools, loss of appetite.
Though it was parvo at first, but I am big on vaccinations and I knew it wasn't.

I still remember laying down next to his Kennel in the vet hugging him while he started breathing slower and slower. The first thing the next morning the vet called and said he passed.

I am not looking forward to when that happens to my current dog.

Wow, prayers for you and the family. I don't think we realize sometimes how attached we get to these pups until something happens

Damn, thats so tough, and thats a great looking dog. I had to take my Golden in back in February....heartbreaking, miss her like hell to this day, and will miss her always. Just take solace in the fact that you took care of him to the end, and he was lucky to have you as an owner. We've all been there, and its awful. To you and your pup.

Not sure. The vet didn't mention it.

He did have a 102 fever and diarrhea so they checked for heartworms just to be sure but he was cleared of that.

The vet said the only other way to be sure it's cancer is to send him for an ultrasound because he didn't really see a tumor on the X-ray but that doesn't mean there isn't one. He said he can feel something by his kidney though which may be a mass pushing on his kidney causing the blood in the urine.

Sorry. I know it sucks. I had to put down my partner in crime the end of last August. She was 3 mos from being 14.

Best of luck to him.

Really sorry to hear that.

What a gorgeous dog.

Maybe you can do a short bucket list for him. I've already decided when my little guy is approaching the end, I'm going to take him for long rides and let him hang out the window as much as he wants as that is his favorite thing to do.

I hate them, but at the same time, I saw threads before I had to put my pup down, and it sort of helped me realize that everyone has gone through this. Its like the greatest curse ever, the lifespan on dogs. I love dogs immensely, but its so hard to stomach their lifespans. I had my one dog, and I loved her to the max, and I can't imagine ever replacing her. frick, the fact that its Golden just ....
