Both my parents worked full time jobs. Even when I was as young as 2. It's called day care. Also everyone saying whose gonna pick them up after school. After school care. Boom. This is how I climbed the social ladder amongst teachers and students older than me

So your a stay at home dad?

Yep. For about 8 years. I did some real estate investing in rental properties. I also helped with the day-to-day of my wife's business. Primarily, I ran the house and tried to keep my oldest out of jail and get her a high school diploma. Not everyone has the greatest and easiest of kids.

I also went back to school and did some introspection on my next career. I landed an entry level job with a software company that I targeted. For the first time in a long time, I'm happy with the job I'm doing and content with the career trajectory that I'm on.

I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but I believe that having two parents is critical for a child. I also believe that having a parent available at any time during the day is a huge benefit to that child. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so. Depends on what your priorities are.

Sounds like it was necessary in your situation.

Much moreso than simply "working", I think the measure of a man is the lengths he will go to for his family. Sometimes that means picking up other jobs/shifts, other times it's doing what you did. Good on you man.

I've told my wife that if god forbid one of our kids goes off the deep end, I'll quit my job and take my kid to the Alaskan wilderness to live if necessary. Whatever it takes. I've seen too many lives ruined--and families for that matter--by teenagers falling into the spiral of drugs and bad influences.

Our situation is different than most because we have at least one retired parent on each side that can pick up the kid from school. So we get that benefit of a SAHParent. Cleaning we outsource. Groceries we split, she does a big weekend run and I do midweek runs. If we have a second then she'll take some time off until youngest is in preschool. After that, her school has after school programs. I don't understand the rush to need to pick up at 3. If needing to get to a program out of school, I would not have a problem either asking for help carpooling or hiring someone to drive (competent high school student that can make easy money?) her to the activity that my wife or I can then pickup.

This shouldn't be a big deal working 8-5. Its got to be way more difficult when a parent works after 6 and/or travels a lot. Also, I can't imagine being a single parent needing to work and balance life with kids.

We were close to doing this. Seriously.

Seriously. I guess she never had to wash bottles before.

Also, I'm one of those wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher people.

I wonder what the rate of divorce is between dual working spouses vs those with one that stays hone

I'm not sure, but I have read that divorce rates are lower among the education population. I believe if both members of the marriage have graduate degrees it's lower than 20%, I don't remember the exact number though.

Well that just means you're an idiot. Assuming your dishwasher was manufactured in the last 20 years you are wasting your time.

My wife doesn't work. My youngest is 6. I like it this way because she's home during the summer and when they get off school. I also don't do shite around the house, which is nice for me

Everyone has what works for them. My mom stayed home all the way up until we went to high school. She went back for a few years, but has been back home for 2 years now. She is "looking" for a job, but you can hardly call it that because she doesn't want to work full time and dad wants her to have all of this random flexibility that no job is going to give.

He likes her to be available for them to go on random vacations or redo something on the house or whatever when he's off (he works shift work), and that's just not going to happen in a traditional workplace.

I guess our house has a shitty dishwasher. I'd rather wash the dishes off than have to scrape dried food off "clean" dishes. Our dishwasher is one year old.

It is far easier to have one parent not work. If you can live off one salary I suggest to do it. My wife couldn't take not working once the kids started school and she worked as a PRN nurse just to have something to do a few days a week at her convenience.

It came with the house. I think I can survive being called an idiot by an internet stranger for washing my dishes off before loading the dishwasher.
