Is the main function of a university academics or athletics? I swear it seems most of the average fans think the latter.

The AD will still give them money, but it will be for specific projects where they can monitor what the money is being spent on.

Holy shite. The melt from the academics when they have to go hat in hand to the AD to ask for some money will be hilarious. I fricking love this.

While it would never happen, especially at LSU and the other handful of athletic departments that are self-sustaining if the correct people were pissed off a school could go nuclear and shut down the whole athletic department.

While I do think more than self-sustaining athletic departments should give back to the school they also should be able to live better because they produce. In the end, the university can function without an athletics department but not the other way around but it is a symbiosis.

It is essentially the AD saying "We aren't going to give you cash anymore because you can't be trusted. Instead we'll give you things that you can't frick up, like new classroom buildings, new technology, infrastructure improvements, or scholarship funds".

It cracks me up and is so awesome.

Great, the governor is bragging LSU is fully funded.

Obviously they don’t need the Ath. Dept money any longer.

I didn't know much about Woodward prior to his hiring, just what was publicized on the radio, but this definitely increases my appreciation for the guy.

When I read about it earlier today, the first thing I thought was "One of the better "frick you's" I've seen recently.

Of course, there may some ramifications to it. I wouldn't be surprised to see an increase in athletes on the academically ineligible list.

Just like a bum at a gas station begging for change for a meal. Hell no I won’t give you a dollar, but I’ll buy you a hot dog if you’d like. 9 times out or 10 they refuse.

It’s not that I don’t want to give you a dollar, it’s that I don’t trust you to buy food with it.

Since they are all such huge donors this will definitely get interesting. TAF board is probably ready to resign.

Athletics bring in infinitely more money than academics. LSU will never be on the academic level of Vandy, Notre Dame or any of the Ivy League schools. You tell me which one will succeed.

oh blow it out your arse. The main function of LSU is research and getting grants/funding. the students are a means to that end. If the university was serious about academics they'd have smaller classes, less students, certainly less students admitted on "a holistic approach", and they would have fixed the fricking leaking roof on Middleton back in 1989 (when I was there and it was leaking). LSU's failure to fix their infrastructure proves they aren't serious about academics. They are interested in money. Plain and simple.

Conversely, the Athletic departments commitment to better infrastructure, secured by its own funding, is a clear indicator of a commitment to success in athletics. As it should be. Rather than expecting a handout, FKA and the rest of the university should be taking notes and trying to emulate how to be successful- or at least trying- like the athletic department.

Wrong. Look at the amount of research money that LSU brings in vs. the athletics revenue ($150M to $145M). And that's just the research side of it. Doesn't take into account any other academic revenue stream.

Just updated. Research money alone, LSU brings in around $150M. Last years athletic revenue was $145M

That doesn’t sound like what one would normally consider as “revenue.”

Why do the professors feel entitled to the fruits of the athletes’ labor?

All the academics will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."
