“The biggest concern was can we get a crosswalk over the railroad track,” said Fred Raiford, Director of Transportation and Drainage for Baton Rouge.

Raiford says the last piece of the puzzle, is the crosswalk.

quote:

“I believe we’ll get that at the end of the month when they’re actually going to install that.”

Once that domino tips, the rest will fall into place. But while Raiford is eager to see ground break on the project, safety remains his top priority.

“It don’t do me a bit of good to build on both sides of the overpass and you can’t cross the railroad track,” said Raiford. “And I don’t want people trying to cross the track and be hurt or be hit by a train because of something we didn’t do.”

Sounds like a bridge, but they don't state that it will be a bicycle one.

This seems like a good idea to improve the area. Naturally, the people of BR will hate any improvement that makes an area easier to walk around

Thanks. The whole prob with the current overpass is narrow space and grade. Not sure how they fix that with a bicycle overpass. Maybe they should do an underpass like the Tammany Trace does under the highways.

I bid on the fencing portion of this.

The plans show a gated bike & pedestrian crossing at ground level. No bridge or anything.

Jordan Piazza, owner of The Colonel’s Club, said the delay has been frustrating.

“They were supposed to start this summer,” Piazza said. “We were promised, and nothing has been done.”

Piazza said he is concerned construction could fall during the busiest part of the year.

“If they start that during the middle of football season, it’s going to be disastrous for all of us,” Piazza said. “Fans are in town; that’s the time for the city to make its most revenue, right, as well as the businesses.”

Jordan Piazza is a midget douche well known as an a-hole to his neighbors around there. Maybe folks would care about his 'hardship' if he ever acted even mildly concerned about his neighbors' problems. Or just not being a total a-hole to his neighbors.

This (or something very similar) has been a project for landscape architecture students at LSU for many, many years. I'm glad this is finally coming to fruition. I would have liked to have seen them go with a more innovative LA firm though.

They should have just used the best student rendering and saved a lot of dough.

Oh wait. They’re spending someone else’s money. And brother in law deals don’t make themselves.

This image is ridiculous.

Does anyone believe a green paradise like this will exist underneath the interstate? Imagine the smell, the trash, the noise. Probably be too nasty even for vagrants to give each other BJs for meth there.

Does the graffiti painted on the columns depict a bunch of naked people arranged in various positions?

don’t see this work being completed by football season or before football season,” Raiford said. “It’s just not going to be possible.”

So just wait then.

The times I've met him Baton Rouge Transportation and Drainage Director Fred Raiford always been very nice,

Agreed. My one and only interaction with him was at the old Government Building downtime with the courthouses. Young criminal Supadave had a court date and my Dad wanted to be there. We saw Fred in the elevator and my dad started asking the progress of the Comite Diversion. They talked for 20 minutes while I was in Court. Dad didn’t live the answer but was impressed that Fred answerrrdnhis questions so thoroughly. This was 25 years ago.

I don’t understand why they are doing this now. The interstate construction is about to tear up that area over the next three years.

If I had to guess, whoever won the bids is trying to strong arm them. They should just try to raise more money to complete what they want once the road work is completed.

It sounds like they are breaking ground and have zero idea what the plan is for the railroad crossing portion.

Imagine the mosquitos from the standing water in that image.

The 3 murders in Southdowns/Perkins Road area this year seem to suggest so.

If you didn't see how Houston cleaned up and transformed along Buffalo Bayou west of downtown in the 2000s, I could see not believing this. But the change was massive, turned out great. Lots of paths just like this, parks worked in too. I mean, when it floods you get mud everywhere and it has to get cleaned up, but in general it's great where it used to just be a trashy ditch.
