Grandmother drowns while snorkeling in Turks & Caicos, family sues Sandals Resorts Int'l

Houston Chronicle article - 18Feb Why would a family throw Grandma into the ocean if she wasn't a strong swimmer? If she was a strong swimmer, anyone can have a heart attack or other debilitating medical emergency with no notice or warning. You can't expect these snorkel tour operators to be EMT's.

A Texas family is suing Sandals Resorts after the matriarch of their family drowned while vacationing at one of its resorts. The family also claims the company offered them a free five-day stay as compensation.
Dripping Springs resident Diane Hendricks was with her son, grandchildren and daughter-in-law while staying at Sandals Resort on Turks And Caicos Island in July 2019, according to Houston-based attorneys Mo Aziz, Spence Graham and Joe Vinas. The family booked a snorkeling trip some distance in the Atlantic Ocean on July 20, according to the lawsuit.

While Hendricks was snorkeling, she began struggling in the water, according to the attorneys. Her daughter-in-law helped her into the boat and took off her mask, according to the lawsuit.
The family claims that the snorkeling tour boat operators and instructors refused to help the woman as she struggled to breath. Attorneys say that the boat was not equipped with any life-saving instruments.
The boat operator then took the family ashore to a waiting ambulance, attorneys said. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The lawsuit alleges several acts of negligence by the resort and its employees, as well as wrongful death.

Come on now, you expect people to be accountable for their actions? That's preposterous

The hell they think they should carry on a little skiff taking people to snorkel a few hundred yards offshore?

The opening claims in any lawsuit are always entertaining. The lawyers are allowed to write anything they want just shy of outright lies and the courts do nothing about it. I hate that shite.

Apparently they should have had a full medical facility

Unless it was a 30 second trip back to shore, seems like they should have taken proper precautions. Getting out in the ocean has its dangers.

Ridiculous. Who goes to Sandals alone? I'd counter with 7-day stay for 2.

When I was learning scuba, the onstructor said it wasn't uncommon to have people try to sign up who didn't know how to swim.

IRL daughter in law probably facilitated Grandma's demise.

Like what? She was already in the boat. Are they supposed to have an iron lung on board?

Was she Asian? It seems like every excursion I go on while on vacation there's always an Asian that has to be rescued. Last year one of the guides confirmed to me that they watch all Asians closely as overall they can't swim or swim poorly.

Agree with the lawsuit. That little skiff should have had a full medical facility
