The plate readers also cost thousands of dollars when your phone can scan a code.
License plate readers are expensive because they have to be able to read plates at a distance, on moving vehicles, at night. Most cameras use an infrared light to illuminate the field of view at night, but license plates are highly reflective to infrared so they just look like a glowing blob.
The point is: cell phones and QR codes aren’t going to replace license plate readers. If you needed a QR code scanner to do what a license plate reader does, it would still cost a ton of money and the QR code would have to be huge. Meanwhile, if you can get close enough to snap a picture with a cell phone camera then you don’t really need a license plate reader in the first place.

They should have detectors along roads pinging uninsured cars for cops to nab
And have cops pulling over people playing on their phones while driving.
If I can come across at least 3 people a day playing on their phones on the interstate, imagine what a state trooper could do in an 8 hour shift.
But they'd rather sit on the side of the road and wait for crime to come to them instead of actively fighting it.

I'm not saying keep inspections, but what he said about what the purpose of the QR code would serve doesn't replace what the purpose of the inspection sticker is for.

The state should just start embedding a RFID tag like a toll tag embedded into every plate and be done with it. NO FUGLY QR Code.
That way every car has a GeauxPass built in.

So a cheaper sticker....
That allows you to continue driving legally with an insignificant crack in your windshield.
I’ve seen them discussing this, and I’ve decided to go high risk and roll the dice on not getting a new inspection sticker. Mine expired in November.

it serves little value to the safety of our roads,” Landry said.

Cops play and talk on their phones, too. But, LSP could make bank on I-12 alone if they’d do their job.

LSP will block it, like always

Maybe I don't understand if your point is sarcastic, but do you think that an inspection sticker has any effect on what is currently on our roads? I apologize if you are making a joke here.

Instead of vehicles needing an inspection sticker, Landry said they will instead get a QR code costing $6 “that will be capable of providing instant information to law enforcement about the ownership, year, make, model and eventually, we hope, insurance coverage information.”
That’s what we call a license plate.

You live in Rainbow land?
we got shite heads driving around without insurance, no license plates, or stolen license plates, and you think inspection stickers are keeping unsafe vehicles off the road?
They are simply a method of collecting money. They serve no other purpose.
