That’s their threat anyway. But I doubt any university would actually do it - they’d have to assume a lot of liability if they did. I’d think the university would have a hard time defending their decisions in a court of law were a former student to sue them.

Yep. Long time ago I had a student who was such a dumbass that he copied his papers directly from some website. Even cut-and-pasted the "return to top" links. He was graduating that semester with a degree in MIS and had already accepted a job at a major national corporation. He fell behind in my class and tried to catch up by cheating.
He confessed to the dean and got zeroes on half his work. I had a policy that you had to pass the final exam to pass the class, so I said he could continue, so long as passed the final. Of course, he failed that and failed the class.
He wasn't so worried about the F, though, because the company was going to hire him anyway and let him retake the course by distance. But...they asked for the transcripts to verify, at which point the kid filed a grievance and claimed I'd done all kinds of nefarious shite to ruin his life - absurd because it actually takes me less effort to give you an A+ than to fail you. The chair ended up yelling at him on the phone
. Anyway, his employer told him that with a dishonesty finding on his record they didn't want him working there, especially in their financial data division.

Again, though, those kinds of severe repercussions usually only befall repeat offenders and brazen, unrepentant cheats.

I'm an undergrad still, and an education major. I just wanna coach football and baseball. I admit I'm a dumbass. I just hope I don't get kicked out of school. Sports is pretty much the only thing is was ever good at. I'm kinda fricked if I'm expelled

I'm sorry, but I don't see how anyone with a 3 digit IQ would not think through that the professor wouldn't recognize it a semester after he/she read it. And that doesn't even put the plagiarism software into account. He would have been caught in the 19th century doing this crap.
It just says to me he's dumb. Just talk a bunch of shite, "cite your sources", and if it's remotely well written you should get a B. If a professor like you checks out the source and call him out on it, all he has to do is say that was his interpretation of a passage he never read.
