The era of the “ten blue links” is officially over.

At its Google I/O conference on Tuesday, Google unveiled an AI-powered overhaul of Search centered around a reimagined “intelligent search box” — what the company describes as the biggest change to this entry point to the web since the search box debuted more than 25 years ago.

quote:

Instead of returning a simple list of links, Google Search will drop users into AI-powered interactive experiences at times. Google is also introducing tools that can dispatch “information agents” to gather information on a user’s behalf, along with tools that let users build personalized mini apps tailored to their needs.

quote:

The resulting experience will no longer look much like how people envision Google Search, which has long been defined by ranked links to websites that have the information you need.

With the revamped Search experience, the new search box simply expands to accommodate longer, more conversational queries, rather than making you decide what type of search experience or mode you want to choose at the start of your query.

quote:

Google is also introducing agentic capabilities and AI-powered interactive features into the search experience. This means people will spend even less time clicking the traditional blue links that Google Search used to return.

Starting this summer, people will be able to create, customize, and manage multiple new “information agents” within Google Search. These agents can work in the background 24/7 to track changes on the web and alert you to new information. For instance, you could have an agent track market movements based on customer parameters, Google suggests.

I'm a simple man. I search a topic, I see a list of sites, I click on the most pertinent one. That's all I need, Google.

AI has some great uses but it’s gonna get old when everything on a screen is AI.

Great, this shite already annoys me when it gives me a few blurbs in AI and I have to scroll to find actual links

What you describe is not simplicity. You click on the one that paid the most to be there. Google search turned into a giant ad list and I welcome this change.

Somehow search got worse as time went on.

As someone who uses Google ads for three different companies, I’m curious to see the effect on that platform.

Yes.
And so the rush to train AI is on.
How do we train AI to rank services or restaurants or theme parks or whatever better?
Will it be based on google reviews?
Based on longevity of business?

They haven't settled on a name yet. It will probably be AEO.

Yes, the company whose multi trillion dollar value is built on selling ads is doing this because they will be less able to feed you ads this way.

Turned grok into my defacto search engine. All those wasted hours on Reddit trying to find a simple tech solution or how to change a setting on something because google loved Reddit.

they most certainly have, it’s generative engine optimization (GEO). And it’s happening right now with the AI blurb at the top of search results. I noticed the other day for the first time the Google AI search agent is now optimizing that search blurb for both location and previous search results.

I googled “can plant X be grown in Louisiana” and got a result telling me if it could be grown in Hammond, alongside another plant I had asked about previously

There’s a company called ZETA that is currently partnering with the various commercial and open source AI programs to completely move targeted advertising to GEO, ads based on your own personal data not just your search history or demographic

yes SEO is dead. Things are going to change very quickly

This sucks.

Looks like askjeeves backed out a tad too early. That could’ve raked with the former google model.

The issue with this approach, is that at work, we have a Enterprise ChatGPT account, so all other AI is blocked, meaning that when Google gives me AI results on a topic, all I see is an error.
