When we used to trek from the Warehouse District to Bourbon, we would always cut through Harrah's tunnel in the parking garage to get to Canal. From there, we'd walk down Decatur to around Jackson Square. Sometimes spends some time roaming around Jackson Square, then walk down St. Peters the 2 blocks to Bourbon with a stopover at Pat O's and/or Boondocks

If in that area, I would say avoid canal street at night. Just cross it, don’t walk along it. Also, nothing good happens on the early blocks of Bourbon Street.

After 10:00, the crowds in those areas changes quickly and dramatically.
As long as you keep between Bourbon Street and the River, you should be mostly safe.
When you see people getting in trouble is when they get way too drunk and wander off too far from the tourist crowds.

Very sound advice.

NOLA is a great place to have some really good food and cocktails. But if you're happily married and don't need to blow off a ton of steam, you can follow a few easy steps to be fairly safe: 1. have a great dinner and a few drinks; 2. go catch some music or another cocktail at another site, but don't overdo it; 3. head home around 11p unless you really feel the need to dance and party; 4. Stay off Canal, especially the north end, and don't go north of bourbon. If you're uptown, stay riverside of St. Charles if you don't know the area well.

New Orleans was a great and safe place to grow up in 50s-60s-70s. That New Orleans no longer exists. Daytime mostly ok; nightime take ya chances. Situational awareness and big groups of known friends/family can help.

I would absolutely Uber back at night and not walk. Not being alarmist, just playing it safe and easy. No good reason to make that far of a walk at night,

I wouldn't walk like that anytime (soon before October), time you get to the quarter you will be sweating unless it rains on you.

If you feel the need to go to Bourbon street area, I would daydrink there and then go out at night in Warehouse District / Uptown.

Depending on the ages of your group, you'd probably have more fun at one of the late night bars Uptown. You also wouldn't be tempted to walk when hammered late at night because you'd pretty much be forced to take an Uber.

I'm going on a trip soon to nola with some friends and we are staying in the warehouse district. We will most likely be walking to and from the french quarter. I'm trying to scout out the city before going so I know what areas to avoid that might be sketchy. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Because of the heat/humidity, I’d Uber to Jackson Square, wander around the Square, and then walk to Pat O’s or maybe up Royal a bit. That should give you a big dose of feeling like you walked around the Quarter. From there, walk with the crowds on Bourbon but not too far. No good reason to go downriver from St Peters.

Uber back to the door of your hotel and stay vigilant.

It’s crazy how New Orleans is full of queers, gays, women, etc from all over the world living there but it’s regular old white dudes from Watson who are the most afraid of the city.

While accurate, walking distance from some the "good areas" can get sketchy quick thus the problem.

$5mil home on St Charles then 5 blocks away you have hood rats walking around looking for an opportunity.

In other places I've lived, walking around town at night as a guy (as a woman, it's another story) feels safe and comfortable. In New Orleans, feels like at any moment, someone's going to pop out of the shadows and demand your wallet at gunpoint.

I'm not saying don't go. I'm just saying that you just need to be more careful and have more street smarts in New Orleans compared to a lot of other cities.
