I'm the guy with enough self-respect and respect for others, to put on some semblance of proper garb before I go down to a public area to get my coffee or cereal. I'm the one who isn't trashy and actually has a sense of decorum.

I'm the judgmental prick who looks at you with a sense of contempt for your utter lack of self-respect and etiquette.
But I usually do this from afar, as I don't normally stay in cheap hotels that don't have a formal dining area where trashy people like you would be asked to wear proper attire or asked to leave.

I think a basic Marriott or Hilton brand (like a Residence Inn or Hampton Inn) is a nice enough hotel where you should be expected to look somewhat presentable in a public space.

I've seen some nappy looking beings in the hotel breakfast area.

Usually end up at McDonalds/Whattaburger/ChickFilet.

On business with others:
Wear something appropriate.

Traveling alone and no one knows you there:
Sweats/workout clothes are the bottom of the scale. Don't wear pajamas.

worst I saw was this spring at a Hyatt Place in College Station (insert Aggie joke), nasty wildebeest hair all a mess in pj bottoms, baggy tshirt and barefoot. And of coarse her spawn was in tow, similarly sans footwear

As a frequent traveler, I don’t mind it. It’s trashy sure but one’s man trash is another man’s best.

Worst I’ve ever done is probably athletic shorts and shirt with tennis shoes, but I’m rarely eating breakfast at a hotel after 7.

I usually do 40-70 nights in a hotel a year, I’m not overly an outgoing person but I am friendly and talk to people if I’m an elevator or something.

One time I met a couple I had seen at breakfast a few mornings wearing pajama pants and t shirts. I asked what they were in town for and they actually were from that town and their house burned down in the middle of the night the day I got there. What they had on was what they escaped in. They had only been given a hotel room from their insurance and no clothes yet. I’m sure that’s not the case most of the time, but I like to give humanity the benefit of the doubt.

I have already accpeted that I am OT trashy. So i no longer care.

I go to hotel breakfast in my athletic shorts/t-shirt/ slides. After I'm done eating I'll go up and actually get ready for the day.

I don’t go out in public in anything less than a 5 piece suit. Haircut every 2 weeks, manicure and pedicures nails once a week. Clean shaven every day. Polish my shoes every evening for the next day. Even when I go to the gym I carry my bag and change there, then shower, and put my suit back on.

Be a man and look presentable. Anything less you’re a trashy bum with no self respect and contribute to our Anglo Saxon cultural decline in America.

I only patronize nice hotels so I do not see this.

Generally, people do not care enough about how they look and dress.

It's not trashy. What is trashy is a hotel jacking up prices to $350-400 bucks for event weekends and then serving shitty breakfast, shitty coffee, orange juice that tastes like it has been sitting out for weeks, stale arse donuts. If they want to be gross then i'm gonna be gross.

also hotels suck. This is why AirBNB exists
