I hit NO tip and the dude got pissed off at me. He said a smart arse remark "oh I see how it is" - I'm white, he's black... I get what that dude was trying to accuse me of but race had nothing to do with it. That fricker does not deserve an extra tip for doing the job that I am paying him to do.

First, be a real man and change your own oil. Second, while I agree with you that tipping has gotten retarded if you you are claiming that happened actually did happen you just say nothing and don't go there again. Third, refer back to the first.

Don't tip people who set their own prices.

Barbers, plumbers, mechanics......they all set their own prices.

I will tip those type workers when they go above and beyond, or it is just a shitty day to do the job and they had every reason to blow it off. I tipped the guy who delivered a portable building for me once $100 because he did it on a day when it was 19° with blowing wind and spitting snow. He got it done and done well in around an hour.....set up and leveled. He earned it, and I appreciated him doing it.

Otherwise, if you set the price of your service, it isn't my place to determine if your service is undervalued. If you feel your time and skill is worth more, charge more.

You tip ahead of time to ensure proper service. Perhaps wet their whistle with an amount up front and more after if satisfactory.

Also, to all hell with any system that asks me to tip in full ahead of proper completion of service.

100% ask for the manager.

Fwiw I tip my barber because he does a good job and I would also consider him a friend. Hell I was at his camp a month ago.

Its so easy to just hit no tip, I don't know why you people keep making a big deal about it. You already paying for something, why should you have to give a tip? Why not just charge more for the product if the employee isn't get paid?

I legit lol'd.

Yea there's no way in hell I'd go back there. Not because they are asking for a tip, but because of the response for no tip.

The only non-server I tip is the bikini barista at the coffee place. But only 10% because I'm not in to tattoos.

My time is way more precious then changing oil out of my car. I didn’t go to school for that kind of work

So it took you 3 hrs to have someone else do a job that takes ~ 15 minutes to do yourself and THAT’S a waste of your time?

I’m on board the no-tip story you’re telling, but damn, do your own oil.

The law that allows for lower-than-minimum wage compensation also requires employers to make up the difference if an employee's tips don't push their hourly compensation over minimum wage.
All but 15 states require servers to either make the full local minimum wage before tips or require the employer to make up most or all of the difference to full minimum wage. However, almost all the SEC states are one of the 15 states that only require $2.13, so that covers most of the posters here.

In most states servers are lying to you if they tell you they only make $2.13 an hour.

No Mr jackass. I dropped the car off and ran a bunch of errands and came back to pick up my car.

Sorry Junky, I didn’t take auto mechanics class in High School.

I also tip pizza and food delivery services

If he throws in a beard trim or a warm neck shave, I'll throw in an extra $5. $25 for 30 minutes of work is a pretty solid living, though. Last time, I just needed it cleaned up around my ears and neck. Took maybe 15 minutes- he still got a tip, but that doesn't happen every time.

Come on man. I changed my oil for years but it doesn't take 15 minutes. I'm assuming you order your oil online and don't do anything else other than drain and refill. Because driving to Pepboys takes time. And I guess you don't change any filters or fill up other fluids. A dealer is going to rotate tires in their oil change as well.

I pay $8 a month for a maintenance package on my truck that gets me free oil changes/filters/tire rotations/etc. for life with synthetic fluids. Sitting at a dealership drinking coffee and looking at my phone for an hour is easier and cheaper than doing it myself.

Federal law expressly requires you to make up the difference as an employer.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. This rate applies to covered nonexempt workers.

The minimum wage for employees who receive tips is $2.13 per hour. The amount of tips plus the $2.13 must reach at least $7.25 per hour. If not, your employer must pay to make up the difference

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/faq

Some states have minimum wage laws specific to tipped employees. When an employee is subject to both the federal and state wage laws, the employee is entitled to the provisions of each law which provide the greater benefits.
