So, what's the next notable event in this? Thread seems to have gotten quiet, which makes sense. I guess we wait a couple days and then get the lunar fly-by?

Hopefully the shitter issues don't become a problem.

I am sorta fascinated by the live feed. I keep checking it like Orion is just going to jump a lot closer.

Currently 168905 miles from Earth and 110741 from the moon.

If you hawk it, it seems like it's moving very slowly, but if you come back to it every now and then, you're like, damn, that thing is covering some space!

Pretty much. They are still grinding away with the testing. Big thing today was to test out being able to interface with the Deep Space Network, and a minor course correction burn.

They were also supposed to take a lot of pictures we will probably see tomorrow.

They just finished up their PA interview set with NBC & CBS. You've got a screw loose if you don't like these 4. Victor Glover hit a grand slam with his response to the CBS question about whether they prepared something like A8 (reading a passage from Genesis) since they will be very close on an important religious day. Their comment about already getting a peak at the dark side of the moon and seeing a "crescent earth" also showed that a sent the right people.

Following up on a few things on here, I've been looking up trying to figure out how the assignments work. Canada has another slot in the program and the consensus seems to be that it'll be for the installation of Canadarm3 on Gateway. The little bit I've read seems to point at Gibbons getting that slot after being backup/CAPCOM for this flight. Japan also has a slot and I believe Europe has two. Reid assigned himself to this mission (pretty standard on historical missions for chiefs of the Astronauts Office) so perhaps that plays into the moon landing.

Unfortunately politics is throwing a huge wrench into assignments. The plan for the next moon landing pointed towards Jessica Meir and Andre Douglass. (I saw a few places that thought it would go to Koch but obviously that won't happen.) Luca Parmitano should have one of the ESA slots. There is no way they'll assign non-NASA astronauts to the first moon landing. The optics of NASA sending a foreign astronaut just to do laps around the moon is not a good look. There's also no way in hell that they'll let any other country have the first woman or "minority" on the moon.

I think everything is up in the air after this mission. Hopefully they can figure out Starship. Unfortunately I think we're going to see a crewed launch to the moon in 2028 without many of the safeguards... just so a certain someone can be the one at 1600 when it happens. Hopefully I'm wrong about that and the career NASA employees are able to act as circuit breakers if everything is not ready.

I hate to mention it but we are overdue for another reminder that space travel is not a safe routine thing. Rushing Starship would be in line with NASA mistakes of the past.

Is it me, or does it look like the space capsule is outpacing the Moon on the Artemis Mission Tracker?

It doesn’t have anything to do with Artemis or funding.

If they get money, they want to build a lunar base. They explicitly connected the two, killing Gateway for it.

It just seems that way because the ship is slowing down. It’s like a 12th as fast as it was going on TLI and still slowing.

The official term Isaacman used is "paused." For all practical purposes, it is canceled.

Effort is underway to assess what from it can be re-purposed on a moon base or on ISS.

I use the word Godspeed all of the time.
It just sounds stupid to tell someone to be careful so I just tell them Godspeed

To clarify a few things:
- A lot of NASA's best talent retired recently. Some might still be willing to return as contractors for the moon base, but . . .
- The current NASA workforce is replete with DEI and lazy workers. They know they won't be laid-off, they'll get back pay for govt shutdowns, they have no incentive to innovate and improve, etc. This is gonna be a big challenge for Isaacman to deal with.
- It was the "career NASA employees" that were instrumental in Challenger and Columbia. That NASA culture is far more of a concern than who's in the oval office.
