General Motors is kicking production of its electric pickup trucks at its Orion, Michigan factory down the road for a year as it deals with “evolving EV demand,” according to Reuters. The move may be a sign that EV demand in the near future just isn’t as strong as automakers were predicting.

Originally, GM had scheduled production of its Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV to start in late 2024 at the plant, but now those plans have been pushed back a whole year to late 2025. The shift is reportedly being due to a need for “better manage capital investment while aligning with evolving EV demand,” a GM spokesperson told Reuters. Basically, that means there isn’t enough interest in those two vehicles yet. However, the automaker says the move won’t impact its battery plant plans.

The work truck models that can go 400 miles on a single charge would cost over $70,000 and could climb to $85,000+ with options.

Seriously just frick EVs. If you want people to buy them, make them better and cheaper and stop trying to take shortcuts with government cash and non-stop advertising about how cool EVs are.

Who could have predicted this?

Jim Farley and Mary Barra definitely couldn't. I think they are trying to cozy up to Joe Biden with the hopes that he squashes the UAW strike.

They should have been investing more cash into the next generation of gasoline-hybrid technology rather than going all in in EV's.

Toyota has the correct approach. And they don't have to dick around with the UAW.

EV trucks just don't have the demand yet and the cost of capital is too high to go piss it away. This is zero percent surprising.

This has been proven lately. No one should have to dick around with the UAW. They have proven they are clueless to reality.

General Motors spent about $20 billion so far trying to scale up their EV production while we still don't have a decent public charging network. Now GM has has excellent battery and charging technology, a world class EV chassis that even Honda/Acura are using, and the ability to crank them out in volume......but nobody wants them.

Everyone wants their gas and diesel trucks and SUVs. That's where they should have been focusing their efforts. GM has even sold more Chevy Malibu sedans this year than EV's. And the Malibu is running on a old chassis that was originally designed in 2006.

General Motors is right to develop EV technology, but they went in way too deep, too quickly. They've shelved plans for models that likely would have been popular like the new retro styled Astro van, the GMC Jimmy (Bronco/Wrangler competitor), and the next generation Chevy Camaro. GM and Ford has canceled affordable models like the Sonic, Cruze, Focus, Fusion, Regal, and Taurus while shoveling cash into EV development.

They should have looked around and taken it slower. They have time.

Do they?

I wouldn’t even think of buying one unless they got close to a ICE range while towing.

Most of the public just isn't ready for EV's. Even if they wanted one, the charging network is still very limited in much of the US.

Like you said - it costs a lot to borrow and we seem to be heading into a downturn. Luxury items like the Cadillac Lyric or Hummer EV are not going to be what car buyers demand in volume. Neither will a electric "work truck" that costs almost $100K.

It's too bad that the vehicles people actually want from GM aren't getting built right now because of the UAW strike.

The work truck is the only one they're getting any traction on. But they're in the 55-60ish range and it's hard to justify tooling up a whole product line for low margin trucks.

I'm sure Mayor Pete and his merry band of know-betters and do-gooders will figure out some way to back door an excuse to force GM to make the cars and us to buy those fricking things.

I know this. I will drive my 2011 Dodge Dakota till it melts. I will not EVER buy an EV.

Hear that, FBI bots?
