find a washer and dryer free within 10 miles of the house, go get it, hook it up, if it doesn't work spend about 20 minutes finding out why, go to Fox appliance and get the parts for around $50
This is a giant pain in the arse to most people. I have a truck, trailer and strong back and still wouldn't want to do this.

It will be fine with the hour if you haul it to the curb. I almost did, but called a number on a sign on the street corner for broken appliance pick up. After confirming what I had, he was there in 1/2 hour.

Just grabbed 2 chainsaws off the curb. Ordered carbs off Amazon $20 each. Fixed 20” and 18” bars. One had a brand new chain in a box with it.
Huge big arse shop van. Broken belt. $15. Fixed.
Mowers. $20 carb. Fixed.
Blowers. $20 carb. Fixed.
Weedeaters. Yup. You guessed it $20 carb. Fixed.
Dryer. Broken element. $50 fixed.
Washing machine. Broken pump. $30. Fixed.
I knows guys that ride around neighborhoods on garbage day looking for stuff people just toss because they are too stupid or lazy to fix it.
Thanks stupid/lazy people
cool i guess...some people value time and their time is worth a lot and may not be cutting their own grass anymore. or they may not have a use for a chainsaw except a hurricane and no longer have trees that need to be cut, might want a new dryer etc etc etc
but congrats i guess

I used to do this with washers and dryers. Made good money selling them. Storage became an issue.

How much time did you spend driving around looking at trash piles (sure, sure, you just happened to see them while carrying on as usual ), ordering parts from Amazon, and repairing them. I bet you spent two hours per $120 chain saw when brand new. After expenses you probably made $30 per hour. Congratulations.
There is a guy where I live who has.. I don't want to say its a flea market, but he has a store that has random shite in it. Antiques, etc. He goes around the parish.. Different parts have different garbage days... Rides around early before the trash is picked up to find inventory. A few years ago when I got new furniture, the old coach and love sofa went to the road.. It was put out there a day or two before the trash was picked up and it hadn't been out there 20 mins and him and some other guy is out there loading it up on his trailer.
It would take him less than an hour to make it as new as possible... then maybe sell both for $150... I am just throwing numbers out there, but for people who do that its usually about volume. If that person some the chainsaw and made $30, then that's and then sold other things in which he made $200 on, now he would have made $230.
I respect someone willing to hustle to make money. Its the people who pick shite up because they think one day they could use it for something only to store it away and it never get used.

Youngest son’s GF’s dad grabs anything free to fix and sell. It’s a hobby for him and money made funds extra stuff he wants to buy. He likes putting up huge displays for Halloween and Christmas. That’s how he funds buying all that extra yard stuff. He likes to keep busy.

My neighbor threw out a propane burner about 10 years ago. I haven't put a wrench 1 to it. I used it last night to boil some shrimp. I'll pick up things here and there but I mostly throw out good shite.

I had a neighbor who moved and the new owners didnt want the BGE xl and put it on the street. It wasnt even sooted up inside, I dont think it was ever used.
I took it to the farm and have been using it for 3 years. I think they are about $1500 new. I had to build a stand for it but that was easy.

No. I think its more of a situation where its something they have a knack and its their one way to earn a living.

I’ve never been lucky enough to find a free mower on the curb

What a waste of time for extra money.
I just call random numbers and ask strangers for oh, say, $17,000. Works every time.

When I lived in NOLA I put out a box of old plates, silverware and other assorted household garbage and it got picked clean. I walked outside and there was a friggin line waiting to go through it
I saw some crackhead later walking around holding my old melted spatula
