It’s different for different people

Situations where I see it as a problem-

If a person can’t go a day without drinking alcohol, there an issue. It’s either you physical, emotional, psychological or combination

If a person can’t have one or 2 and quit then there a problem.

If a person drinks and becomes violent, there’s an issue.

Otherwise, there’s plenty of people that drink occasionally without an issue.

Literally everything about your life improves when you give up alcohol with the one exception being social life. Even so, eventually you will get to a point where that does not suffer

Coming from a family with several recovering alcoholics, I really think it’s genetic. My dad was a raging alcoholic for years when I was younger, but he’s been sober now over 25 years. I never had “the bug” and can regularly drink a few drinks several times a week, and have no need to keep going or get drunk. My dad would literally drink 20-30 beers within two hours.

Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what I’ve always thought (that genetics play a role) seeing it played out in real life. All the best to those who formally quit it, though!

Its so bad for you. Its a very complicated issue because it plays a really significant role in our culture.

That's a gross generalization IMO, especially for those without addictive personalities.

But I do know for alcoholics it's all or nothing, there is no "in moderation".

Quitting alcohol was the best decision I've ever made

I’m trying no alcohol for lent. I have these aches and pains that only pop up when I drink. Also to drink enough to enjoy it I feel like shot for days.

Has anyone just given it up cold turkey? Did you notice a big difference in your health? Life? Relationships? Did you go back?

No difference. Just didn’t feel like it was worth it. Will go back eventually. It kinda makes certain social engagements a bit awkward.

Its strange because like being an addict, normal folks will also never understand being completely sober because they don't have to. Its pointless to argue with them because of this, regarding consumption.

Good God Man!!!! Unless you are a falling down drunk, whatever are you thinking?

Never considered myself a drunk. But, having a drink a night, every night means it’s a habit.

Did Dry January cold Turkey, no issues but also no noticeable benefits besides maybe a couple of pounds.
I did this also. Kind of pissed me off. It didn’t seem worth the effort.

Even when I did drink I always thought it insane all the different times people would drink casually for no reason or benefit

If you had to put forth effort to not drink, that should tell you something.

You do you though.

It’s not a gross generalization. Name one positive it has outside of what I stated as a potential drawback of quitting (social life). It brings zero positives to someone’s health and it costs money. I can’t think of a single thing that it would improve someone’s life.

I did. Last year… did dry January and couldn’t believe how much better I felt. Decided to continue for a couple more months to realize more benefits. Found out I was pregnant; so then just kept it going. Chose to go the entire year of 2023 and have no desire. It causes more harm than good, i found it was creating anxiety for days after. My sleep was terrible. My health, mental health and well being has improved and not having hangovers is great. I have a lot of addiction in my family so I’d rather just stay away from something that really serves no great purpose in my life given the harm I’ve seen come with it.

I rarely get blackout drunk or sick. While I totally see your point, I’m not sure that’s the solution but I guess it’s worth a try
It's not worth a try it's fricking retarded.

Would you tell a meth head to try and overdose so they're scared of meth?

Alcohol is a thief. Reach out to your friends. I promise you they want to help you.

There are no positives. People will justify their drinking because they like to drink and don't know how good it feels to be alcohol free. It is funny how normalized and even celebrated poisoning yourself with alcohol is in many cultures

For me, I stay California sober; only ketamine, psychedelics, and an occasional line or ten of blow

How so? How does not drinking make social engagements awkward? Just curious...

It only does for me for work trips. If you feel awkward around your regular crew for not drinking, you need a new crew
