Outside of a glass of wine with a nice meal or a small glass of bourbon, I struggle to see the point in drinking at all if you’re just going to have a few. Does nothing for me. It’s like foreplay that ends abruptly without the orgasm. Might as well just leave your dick in the pants and drink soda water with lime or non alcoholic beer.

I feel this way, but only during the day. a couple beers or drinks in the afternoon will ruin my day if i don't keep it going. i occasionally just have a couple drinks at night though.

I think it's just a different mentality for different people. I look at it the exact opposite.

Basically the only thing I will drink now is wine. However, I never have more than 2 MAYBE 3 glasses. Anything past that and I will start feeling drunk, not sleep well, have a hangover. None of that is enjoyable. I am drinking it to enjoy the taste, just like eating a good meal.

If you need to go to treatment my recommendation is Lincoln Nova in Ruston. Best treatment facility I've ever been to.

And if you're an alcoholic it has to be cold turkey. As with any addiction (although with benzos I do recommend tapering) if you still do a little before long you're right back to doing alot. Every time.

I did recently after a lifetime of drinking every night.

Yes, I feel much better. It wasn't as difficult to do as I had in my head to be honest.

I’ve never understood how a man just can’t stop drinking. I just don’t get how you can’t go a day without alcohol. Is it really addictive or is it just a habit you can’t break?

On the flip side of this, as a drunk/addict coming up on 10 years sober, I never understood (and still don’t understand) how some people can just stop. It’s just never been my experience so it’s hard for my brain to comprehend.

To take it even further, I used to go out to eat and have some drinks. It made me uncomfortable to see people in the restaurant order only 1 or 2 drinks and not even finish them. Like physically and mentally uncomfortable. I couldn’t comprehend the reasoning for even ordering it if the intention wasn’t to get blasted A non drunk wouldn’t even notice this.

Did for about 5 years. Detox shakes sweats but once that was over felt better. I don’t drink much now but I’ll have a beer or 2 or a whiskey on the rocks. Once it’s gone I’m not running to the liquor store.

Has anyone just given it up cold turkey? Did you notice a big difference in your health? Life? Relationships? Did you go back?

First, if you are "giving up" and "going back," you probably have a problem.

Second, yes, pretty much everything improves. You may not notice, because if you were drunk all of the time before, you probably didn't see the problems. This can make things seem worse. It is like flipping on the lights and noticing that things are a mess. When you stumbled around in the dark, you didn't see so you didn't care.

Health benefits are obvious and almost immediate (once you get past the addiction side effects). Improved sleep, better skin, weight loss, and the biggie is reduced inflammation. Inflammation can just frick up your entire world.

Wife and I for years would have 1-2 glasses of wine on weeknights and considerably more on weekends. We have instituted a no drinking policy from Sunday-Thursday (with exceptions for work happy hours/friend dinners/etc.).

I've lost a little weight, but most notable improvement in health is sleep, and thus my energy the next day. Unreal how much more energy I have for life in general.

We still have fun with alcohol on weekends, but even that has slowed down as a result of stopping on weeknights and realizing how much better we feel.

There’s no upside to alcohol.

Truth. Huberman, Pete Attia and others call it "poison", which it really is when you think about it. Did a Dry January and carrying it over into Feb. I have never drank at home unless I'm having a party and never during the week or with meals. As somoene mentioned, it's amazing how much $ you save, to say nothing of the numerous health benefits.

I dunno, but I’ve (embarrassing to admit) become an alcoholic the last 2 years and I need to change. But everyday I start the cycle over again. I go to bed just about every night with great intentions for the next day.

You’re not alone.

I haven’t asked for help yet, but I’m getting to that point because I seemingly can’t do it on my own, even though I’ve definitely tried multiple times. Hell I’m gonna try again tomorrow… I’ve got a sticky note on my kitchen counter “DO NOT DRINK TODAY!”

Fortunately it hasn’t wrecked my life yet… work, finances, etc still fine… but this is not who I want to be yet I keep doing it. I’m sorry I don’t have the answer for you.

Jesus have you been reading my post in the Lunch Threads?

Sounds like me before I quit drinking 5 1/2 months ago

The biggest factor for me was being there for my son, I was drinking after work and would find reasons to go to the bar before coming home and drinking more. My days were turning into blurs and it just hit me that I wanted to be in my sons life as a positive influence. For me, it was about loving someone else more than I loved myself, which as an only child, has always been difficult for me.

Today marks 8 months sober for me. I feel the best I ever have and feel I am a lot better off. I am also down about 16lbs from working out and eating better. There are times I miss it but am quick to remind myself of all of the bullshite I did and the trouble I got myself into not to mention the hangovers were horrible. I had a problem with stopping once I started. I wasn't an everyday drinker but when I did I gave it 110%. If you can drink one and put it down that is great, I never could or never wanted to. Depends on how you look at it. Quit for a couple of months and see how you feel, you can always go back out if your life was so much better while drinking.

I jest on the whatever are you thinking. My Dad was a functional alcoholic in that more nights than less he came home and poured glasses of Vodka and was passed out right after dinner.

It affected me in that I really never had much tolerance for drunks. I did not mind getting together periodically with some friends and have a couple of drinks. But as a matter of a weekly thing, that ended 20 years ago. Now it is mostly at Thanksgiving, Christmas time, a few on the Saturday before Mardi Gras...and that's about it now. Maybe some High Life's in the summer after yard work. Last summer I bought a 12 pack in June and polished off the last 3 this past weekend to give you an idea.
