How so? How does not drinking make social engagements awkward? Just curious...

Because of what I realised: when you are sober, you start to see how annoying your friends are when they drink, which makes you not want to hang around with them at social events where they are drinking. That, in turn, leads to uncomfortable situations when they confront you about why you are always skipping out early.

There will also be a few who try to convince you to "just have one drink" until you finally convince them that you don't drink anymore and won't drink.

The only ones who haven't pushed alcohol on me were family and my oldest friends I grew up with.

I have stopped hanging out with a lot of my friends from my drinking days because I figured out we weren't really friends, we were just drinking buddies.

Name one positive it has outside of what I stated as a potential drawback of quitting (social life). It brings zero positives to someone’s health and it costs money. I can’t think of a single thing that it would improve someone’s life.

Some experience are subjective to the individual. Many people like to relax with a glass of wine with their wife/husband on the weekends /date night. Wine for example has plenty of antioxidants and in moderation can be cardio sparing.

Not everyone who comsumes alcohol has to drink a handle of Vodka at a time, some are actually able to have restraint and do it in moderation.

made me uncomfortable to see people in the restaurant order only 1 or 2 drinks and not even finish them. Like physically and mentally uncomfortable. I couldn’t comprehend the reasoning for even ordering it if the intention wasn’t to get blasted ? A non drunk wouldn’t even notice this.

Non drinker here. It doesn't make me uncomfortable but it does make me wonder. The stuff doesn't taste good, so why do they drink it if not to get drunk or at least buzzed?

This is a myth

I did pretty much. First was when I bought a bar in grad school. It just took the fun out of it.

Second time was doctors orders. It’s really no big deal

When you stop drinking, after a time, certain neurological synapses start to happen and you are much sharper. It pays dividends at a time, but you will notice them as time progresses.

I have a glass of wine every couple of months. If you choose label me an alcoholic, more power to you.

I think those with an addiction cannot relate to those who do not and think we are all the same which is just not true.

Unless you’re a full-blown alcoholic and don’t know the difference, drinking simply gets more difficult to enjoy as you get older as your body tolerates less abuse.

I was drinking two-three glasses of wine per evening. Id wake up feeling like shite even though I wasnt getting drunk. Got a blood test last week and my liver count was elevated and my kidney function was a little off. Once I heard that, I told myself - no more. I didnt get the withdrawal symptons (lucky me), So I tossed the bottle of wine in my fridge and havent drank since. Ive been drinking a lot of water since to help flush my kidneys and it seems to be working. Some folks dont realize that alcohol really effects the kidneys and causes dehydration.

Already feeling better, sleeping better, not groggy in the morning, clearer thinking. I wasnt an alcoholic but even only after a week I feel so much better. It was worth it. No plans to start drinking again. Its just not worth the bad health effects.

March 6 makes five years sober for me, I was able to stop cold turkey for Lent and just kept going. Every measurable aspect of my life is better, simply put.

I don’t know if you’re a spiritual person, but I turned to God and just give it to him and it’s amazing how he can move in your life.

Join a good church and join some fellowship groups like Bible studies and surround yourself with positive influence etc…. And it gets easier

I gave it up a few years back, no issues. I wish I would have done about 50 years earlier.

I quit drinking many years ago, I'll have a beer maybe once every couple months or a mixed drink at a wedding but that's about it. Feel better, no hangovers, and really don't have any urge to drink. Did enough of that when I was young, no need to kill more brain cells, I don't want to be like Biden.

I never started. I’m sure there’s a lot of misery I avoided that way.
