"Give me your tired, your poor" has run its course

It made sense both morally and economically back when the US was young, and needed an influx of immigrants to help it grow and expand.
But we are full now, and in some places bursting at the seams.
Remember, we are a very young country compared to everyone else, and nobody else has the same immigration philosophy because they reached their full points long ago.
It just doesn't make sense in a world of 7+ billion and rising.
But we are full now, and in some places bursting at the seams.

I agree, it is one thing for Louisiana to send all of their college educated to Houston but after 05, we’ve had enough.

Agreed, but it’s not like it was ever our official motto or govt stance on immigration. I don’t know why people cherry pick this quote as if it means anything, it doesn’t. It’s intellectually lazy.

An 100 year old saying doesn’t apply in 2018? Shocking

We still do.

According to who? You?

No one has ever had our immigration policy. Ever.

Sure it does.
We need immigrants. We need the labor, fresh ideas, and the drive to be successful. However, we can't run a welfare state and have unfettered immigration. Either eliminate welfare system and allow immigration OR keep the welfare state and screen the applicants. FYI, we became the greatest nation in the world following the first model.

Our immigration policy shouldn't be based upon an inscription.

How educated could they possibly be if they want to move to Houston?

It has nothing to do with over population, growth is good. It has to do with social safety nets being full and the middle class evaporating.

Once the tired and poor got rested and non-poor, they figured it was time to change that motto.

Its a poem on a statue not public policy. I feel like people have trouble understanding that.

Agree. It was a poem written for the SOL and is engraved on the pedestal. It's not National policy.

Like San Antonio they had to cross a river to get to Houston but in our case, we are getting their best.

I really wish we had a board on this site to discuss political topics. This thread would fit perfectly there.

The US wants immigrants that are educated (highly skilled workers) and that can contribute society. Even for the highly skilled and educated immigrants, it’s gotten much harder to get a green card then most people realize.
They haven’t wanted the tired and poor since the early 1900s (unless you’re a refugee) and even then those people were laborers which we don’t need anymore.

If we were not advancing socialist policies we could handle immigration. But you cannot give everything away for free and let people pour into receive it without paying in their fair share.
The other thing besides that is the world isn’t heading to where unskilled labor is needed. AI and computers are taking over these jobs, hopefully so we don’t need all these people sucking on the tit.

So you are saying everyone should just stay were they were born?

We have PLENTY of room and capacity for those that want to come here, work, and contribute to society.
100 plus years ago, the tired got here and rested for a while, then they went to work so that they would no longer be poor.
That's the difference. Back then, we were seen as a second chance, a fresh opportunity, and people took it. Now, we simply are world cop and welfare giver.
