I am with you to a degree and am a big fan of immigration in general, but I genuinely, wholeheartedly worry about illegal immigration's contribution to economic inequality.
I have never seen an economic study that I thought was robust enough and comprehensive enough to be believable that says that illegal immigration didn't heavily contribute to our lowest two quintiles lowered standard of living, median wage stagnation, etc., etc. Every economic instinct of mine is to call complete bullshite on these articles and studies you see occasionally because the methodology just isn't rigorous at all.
I think Europe is having somewhat the same problem (though not illegal, at least in a sense). The richer EU countries are having huge influxes of residents from poor EU countries and refugees, and I can't imagine that's been a net benefit for the lower quintiles in France or Britain or Germany. Switzerland has some of the strictest immigration laws in the developed world, and I don't think it's an accident that they also have, probably, the highest median income in the world and the best quality of life - besides the cultural ethic of Switzerland, their middle and lower classes just weren't swamped with tons of outside labor competition with virtually no screening and no abatement mechanism.
I also sympathize with the dude above whose parents immigrated from India. I would be pissed as hell if an illegal immigrant got certain rights for free after I paid a ton of money and waited a lot of years to do it the legal way.
Tough situation all around.

Right! Also some of today’s immigrates are nothing like or have the same reasons for immigrating as those 100-200 years ago. Totally different end world now.

When those words were written the poor and tired were Irish and German and to some extent Italian but like many words from our racist past, they just don't apply in a modern context. I hear we are looking for a hip new slogan to put on the statue, something like "frick off, we're full."

It’s not a very hard concept. There is legal and illegal immigration. We have to stop ILLEGAL immigration for many reasons.

One thing no one has mentioned is the crime they commit. There are hordes of illegals that cram up into houses and party all night causing problems in neighborhoods. They then proceed to drive drunk and get into accidents and almost always flee the scene. Almost impossible to locate these people because of all the fake paperwork these people carry. Another obstacle is to try and investigate crimes where these guys are suspects. The U.S. has no proper information on them. No prints in the system or anything. This is a more important reason to halt illegal immigration. MS13 is starting to cause major ptoblems in larger cities across this country.

The biggest Trump supporter I've met is a Mexican national that went through the immigration process

Friend is mine is a huge Republican and is originally from Mexico(came over here legally with her family as a teen). Her parents have dual citizenship.
She gets pissed off at all the undocumented Mexicans in our city.
I work with many Filipinos. They also get pissed off about all the illegals here. One of them told me about how his parents had to wait a decade before they could legally come over here and they spent $$$ and went through lots of red tape. Told me that you would wait in line all day long at these offices to get your applications/paperwork in for immigration.

Yeah, this guy was my neighbor on the border and he also still had lots of family that lived in Mexico. Hated illegals. If I saw that my alma mater was handing out degrees to people that just showed up to campus and camped out in the classroom after I spent all that time and money, I'd be pissed too.

Not even that. It is not engraved on the pedestal.
Inside the pedestal are some rooms. Inside that room is an exhibit commemorating a fund-raising contest to raise money to BUILD the pedestal. Part of that exhibit features a plaque with that poem, which is on the wall, in a room, inside the pedestal of the stature, not engraved on the pedestal of the statue for the immigrants on ships to see as they sail to Ellis Island.

Legal immigration is fine, it's the illegal shite that needs to be stopped. Anyone not here legally should get sent back and apply legally.
