Louisiana was the first to pass the law and PornHub quickly identified a way to have people's age verified. As more stated have passed laws they have now taken the stance that "its too expensive" so that they can get porn users on their side. But they vastly underestimate the amount of people that will go to bat for them by saying they watch porn
It's easy to comply without violating privacy. Get a third party to say "skankhunt42 is of legal age".
PH wants to peddle to minors because the adolescent brain is more vulnerable to addiction. It's the Joe Camel of the 21st century.
Agree that they didn't think their cunning plan the whole way through. Odd that users aren't willing to knight for them publicly when there's nothing immoral about the content.....

It's not that easy. It's an actual ID based verification that if violated states have a repercussive action against. So it's not some random company that says "Yeah we verified Bestbank Tiger" They need an actual ID to tie to "Bestbank Tiger" showing the age.
But they already have the system in place, but have chosen to not use it in other states so they can cause the most disruption/outrage from their customers.
Now that they have this ruling they will quickly allow the other states to verify as well as they want to get as much money as possible - and can only do that with a larger customer base.

The only way to enforce it is to force everyone over 18 to hand over their drivers license to watch porn.
You know that’s how it used to be, right? I understand that the ID information wasn’t necessarily stored on a server somewhere, but in some instances (like Blockbuster) they could track what you were watching if they wanted. Plus you had to do the little walk of shame in a store full of people from back in the naughty room behind the black curtain and physically hand your porn choice to the checkout clerk.

We all got it. Everyone had a friend or a cousin or whatever that got you a dirty magazine you stored under your shoes in your closet. It's the same way now, except your friend with the hookup has been replaced by a VPN.
It adds friction when it comes to the access for kids. It’s not perfect, and no standard is as you learned as a kid. But the additional friction (no pun intended), which is a good thing.

Basically, you are required to prove your age/identity anytime you go to a website with any type of adult content. It’s too expensive and burdensome for porn sites to implement, so they simply shut it off for that State.

Good
I’m sure all the porn addicts of the OT will cry about this though

This is my main position.
You aren’t going to be more equipped than your child to navigate the internet. They will grow up with tech and with which you won’t be familiar. I’m not saying they will be as tech savvy as you. I’m saying that their perspective and experience with tech will be more rooted in their day to day life which is going to lead to a way of interacting with it that you don’t understand.
When I was 13 my mother had been using computers far longer than I had. There was 0 chance she was going to stop me from viewing what I wanted when I wanted. The same will happen with your kids.
And if it isn’t your kid figuring it out, a friend will. And there will be this entire way of circumventing something that they keep quiet. Until a kid spills the beans. At which point there will be another block. At which point someone else will figure out how to get around that block. Around and around and around.
You aren’t putting the genie back in the bottle.

Good. All states should do the same.
These laws do nothing but keep people off pornhub.
Performative nonsense.

It’s way too easy for kids to access porn otherwise.
There is porn on Reddit and Twitter. Along with other sites.
This law does nothing if “preventing kids from watching porn” is the goal. Absolutely nothing.

So the law just requires companies to have to reasonably and privately verify ages without using or storing any information used in that verification outside of being 18 or older and is directed solely at those companies not the adult consumers?

Here's the breakdown on this. Keep in mind as you read, my stance is I wish porn didn't exist. Its detrimental to society and I wish there was a way to do this that didn't have the below drawbacks.
1. This is giving control to the government, thats bad. Simple as that. This is a stepping stone to further control.
2. This is ineffective. We cant go after porn hosts that are outside of the US. Alternatives will always exist and it won't be jumping through hoops, itll just hurt the US sites and amplify foreign sites.
3. This is a security risk. Given how we've had major corporations like Atnt and Sony have enormous data breaches, Sony being actual CC info, as well as websites that went obsolete selling log in info, registering your ID to these websites is clearly no ideal.
While I don't think this is stopping kids at all, as much as I wish it would, it should at least being a societal influence that we want solutions to keep kids away from porn and that it's not ok nor should be normalized.
Please leave a comment explaining your downvote so we can have an adult discussion.

Kids will have a VPN in a nanosecond
This is nothing but religious so called “small govt” conservatives feeling good about themselves
In reality this does nothing except give the govt more power. It doesn’t help fight any cause

VPN flows thru other countries, not just states.

Any porn I've intentionally watched has been thru a vpn and using duck go browser.
