48kw is a little overkill isn’t it?
Maybe it was specific to our diesel 100KW commercial CAT, but our company wanted their genny's to be load to around 60%.

To everyone: PLEASE change the oil in your generator after this is over.

In general you need at least 12kw for whole house.

Even if you have a fuel shutoff and cut it off then let the generator run itself out of fuel, you still have to drain the bowl on the carburetor.

Its better to leave it full of treated fuel than leave empty.

I leave my homelite 6000 full of treated fuel. I do not start it once a month. Its been around since 2007 and is very dependable. Its basically a honda knockoff.

Curious how you are connecting all of the devices?

Just bought a generac 6500. I see that I can get a transfer switch installed, but seeing other options as well.

Make a "deadman" cord. Get about 25-30ft of 10/3 power cord (Home Depot), put a male dryer plug on one end and a 240v twist lock plug that matches your generator on the other. Usually a NEMA L14-30.

Turn off your main breaker.
Unplug your dryer and disconnect the exhaust hose.
Pass the cord through the exhaust vent in your wall.
Plug cord into the dryer plug and connect the generator.
Switch off all 220v breakers except the one for the dryer.
Start generator.
Enjoy electric light and cold beer.

Tiger Power 20kw PTO generator run by a 50 hp Kubota tractor. Runs whole house relatively easily but need to turn on water heater, fridge and AC one at the time after startup so they all don’t try to cycle on at once.

Nice not having another engine and fuel supply to keep up with. Diesel fuel won’t go bad near as quickly as modern gas imho.

Negative is we’ve moved from the country to a subdivision and now we don’t really need it. Power was off about 12 hrs after Sally. Wouldn’t have been worth the trouble of going to the camp to get it and bring it home for that. Don’t have a transfer switch at new house yet anyway.

I’ll probably sell it. Will make a deal for any TD member in need.

13,000 Watt Duramax from Generator Depot. $1,400 Dollars runs off dual fuel Gas or Propane..Generator has electric start so I keep it connected to Harbor Freight trickle charger.

HI had to have a Manual transfer switch installed because of choke system on Generator.

Those Predator generators are rock solid. I have the small 2000w and a 3500w. You can't beat them, especially for the price.
I can even run a 14.5k btu AC off of the 2000. It struggles to start the compressor, but once it's running the generator is fine.

Mine is running off natural gas so there is a nearly seamless transition to generator power.

If you’re going with a whole home standby and propane is your only option do not get the smallest size tank for a 22KW. Buying a 500 gallon tank for the generator is the way to go.

The 250 gallon tanks are undersized for them but the cheapest option

My parents have a generac, and they love it. They are older so it's great for them.

We had a thread about this couple weeks ago.I was all set to get a Generac whole house generator but couple people in my area have new ones and they failed pretty quickly with Laura.I’ve talked to several people that have had them fo 4-5 years and they’ve had good luck with them.Lots of bad reviews on the Internet also.Makes me wonder if they’ve cheaped out on their manufacturing.
Heard enough bad stories I’ve changed my mind.I would be beyond pissed if I spent the time and money plus getting propane tank and have it crap out when I needed it.
I’ve decided I’m going to get 2 Honda 7000’s,parrellel cord and have electrician hook up transfer switch.I’ll still have to deal with gasoline but I have faith in Honda.
What I’ve been using is a Briggs 5500 and a Honda 2200 for television and Internet.I’ve had good luck with the Briggs but it is loud as hell and uses lot of gas.

I got a used one but can’t get the damn thing started for more than 39 seconds. It’s all gummed up and rusted I’ve tried to spray carb cleaner and put a can of sea foam in with the gas and still nothin. Code reads “OL” for overload. Wondering if anyone could help.

Home Depot Generac that we bought years ago but never actually used until today. Fired up on third crank. It's used about 35% of 4.5 gallons over the course of about 5 hours. It's managed to keep up 2 fridges, several fans, home entertainment area, and about 3 laptops easily.

Do you have an auto transfer box or a main breaker lock out to prevent back feeding to the power lines?

Northstar 8000. Cranked up first try and ran flawlessly for 12 hours when lights came back on.

Honda 2000, fantastic. Television, wifi, router, roku, box fan, led table lamps, fridge. Unplugged fridge to run the coffee pot. Tank lasts about 6 hours

This.

Old, now retired generator guy I used for work my fleet gennys recommends the Honda 2000 series and has one at his camp. Says if you do routine maintenance and give it fresh fuel each season, you have to literally shoot it for it not to work.
