According to Tristan, he suffered a fractured nose, bruised orbital eye socket, concussion, chipped front teeth, lacerations, stitches, and bruised ribs.
Seems they could have been beaten to death had some good Samaritans not intervened.

Randomly beating up gays has never been cool in my book. I don't remember gay violence in the 50's or 60's but then you did not know who was gay as it was not open. I know at least one popular Alabama player was but it was never made public and I had a Sooner roommate once who was gay but total tough guy to the public. Part of the reason the mob got so powerful as they owned gay clubs all over the country. Hoover knew they knew and never went after the mob.

Before many schools were co ed you had male cheerleaders who were the off sport athletes.
Generally the basketball cheerleaders were football players
Generally the football cheerleaders were basketball players
As back then the football players played offense and defense they were apex alphas.
