I want my 2 car gararage to be oversized, big enough to fit my pickup and SUV with enough room to not bump walls when opening doors. Want two separate bays, meaning 2 garage doors. What size should I make it?

Big enough to fit your pickup and SUV in it without bumping the walls when you open the doors

We have this. It's a 2.5 car garage. Not sure the dimensions off the top of my head, but it's referred to as a 2.5 car garage in all our paperwork for selling our house.

Why? you won't park there. You will just fill it with junk like everyone else.

Just make sure you plan big enough for any shite you want to put in the garage. We have a freezer and refrigerator out there but it offsets things enough to cramp the garage.

Find the dimensions of your cars, and add 4 or 5ft. How hard is that?

Make sure you get the insulated doors that’ll hold all the carbon monoxide in for when you realize how much you paid to build a house.

Check with your home insurance person as to any breaks you might get if the garage is detached from the house.

If you’re working with an architect, make sure they draw the garage minimum 24’x24’ (minimum) THEN add the storage area. So many builders are doing 21’x 22’ and it does not work! It’s not even close.

ETA; if you want two separate garage doors, then it needs to be even wider. That style looks good, but most people will tell you they wish each bay door would be wider.
I’m thinking.

I suggest driving around to a new subdivision and pull into to one to try it out. The two separate doors would be a pain in the arse for me.

Get a three car garage. I have a “2.5” car garage, and still only park one car inside of it (work bench, beer fridge, random shite take up too much space). An alternative is a two car garage with one bay being double deep. Or just a three car garage. Don’t just focus on width, but depth as well, especially with SUV’s and if you plan to do any storage on the back wall.

10' is an oversized parking space. 9' should work, just make sure you have enough space between them and on the sides. That's where the magic happens.

Mine is a little more than 20' x 20'. We have relatively smallish vehicles, and I still feel like beating the living shite out of our contractor who built our house and putting in such a small garage.

I'd add a minimum of 5 feet on length and width.

How much could that possibly be? $100/ year? Seems like there's no way it would save you the cost of the additional building.

Op, make it as big as you can afford. Seriously. You need it at least 23ft long to fit a truck and have enough room to walk in front of it comfortably. I had a buddy build a nice new like $500k house in The Woodlands in Houston and he has a 19 ft garage. Can't park his truck in there. Given most people can't

Also, I'd make it 2.5 cars officially like others said for resale value. He'll make it 3 if you want to park 2 full size vehicles plus have crap.

Ask your husband to measure the larger of the two vehicles with doors open, double it then add 10’ or so

we have a 20x30 "3 car" but it's really a good size for 2 and normal garage junk. we can put three cars in a jam if a storm is coming or something but i wish it were at least 25' deep
