I was going to post this as well. The back-and-forth dialog between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza is hilarious.
Great book. My favorite of all time. I've read it 3 times over the last 20 years. Think it about time again.

Probably not very many people on the 0T that have read Don Quixote. 2000 pages scares off most.

It's not an easy read to be sure.
Still, I highly recommend this novel to anyone who is willing to invest the effort to read one of the greatest written works ever created.

You may be thinking of Bill Bryson's humorous writing about hiking the Appalachian Trail. His books aren't really novels, but they are all funny as hell.

As others have mentioned Confederacy of Dunces is a must. Honorable mentions:
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime
A Spot of Bother
Breakfast of Champions - Vonnegut
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
I Don't Care About Your Band (chick humor, but damned funny)
shite My Dad Says
Dress Your Family in Denim and Corduroy

He's a "satirist". He writes essays that are well-written and many times topical and overall hilarious.

I second Kurt Vonnegut and Chuck Klosterman essays. The David Sedaris Holidays on Ice short stories are really funny. Grisham's Ford County was colorful and entertaining. So was Playing for Pizza.

I would recommend confederacy like others have, and you will find it funny, but not being from the area you might not find it as funny as we do. But good omens is also very funny. I can read them over and over.
