I'll have to agree with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy recommendations. There is some hilarious reading in that series. (I would stay away from Mostly Harmless though).
It's been a long time since I read Confederacy of Dunces so it's hard for me to comment on it. But I remember it made me kind of sad. (Probably from the way it was only accepted and came out after the author had committed suicide).

Catch-22 is right up there. Bill Bryson's books are very funny but I didn't mention them because they are not novels.

Some good suggestions, I'll add Carl Hiaasen who can be very funny. His earliest stuff is is best. I'd recommend him in sequence;
Tourist Season
Double Whammy
Skin Tight
Native Tongue
Strip Tease (very different from the movie)
Eventually he starts getting preachy and angry and the quality falls off but his early stuff is excellent.

Definitely second this suggestion. But I like some of the newer ones too, especially Skinny Dip and Star Island.
For those who don't know, Hiaasen writes funny crime novels, mostly set in S Florida. He's also a columnist for the Miami Hearld.

I haven't read either so both are on order from Amazon now, thanks. You can pick up his used paperbacks for $0.01 on Amazon (same for most older paperbacks). Shipping brings it to just under $4.00/book.

I would echo Catch-22, then. That's a great pivot (although the comedy is very serious at times), as is M*A*S*H, also recommended.
And I echo the Hitchhiker's Guide books - essentially all of them, but particularly the first 3.

I Love You Beth Cooper is worth a read. I laughed my arse off the first time I read it. Written by a guy that wrote for The Simpsons during the golden years.
Jean Shepards In God We Trust All Others Pay Cash is a good one too. You'll recognize some of the stories from Christmas Story.
I realize these are light compared to some of whats been posted, but its nice to have easy reading every once in a while.

yes that's it - i have also read traveling thru a sunburnt country and the history of house. Walk thru the woods is probably my favorite
