I second (or third or fourth...I didn't count) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Good Omens is also an excellent read.
Dirk Gently (2 books by Douglas Adams) and Starship Titanic (Douglas Adams and Terry Jones) are great too!
Not novels but many volumes about the same world by a great, hilarious writer...Terry Pratchett.
