I'm going to guess that the small vocal group pushing for the change are almost exclusively white women with liberal arts degrees.

I seriously doubt anyone is. My guess is the developer wanted it changed to the name of their $Billion investment that they are building for marketing purposes and used the offensiveness as an excuse.
They now have a bunch of baws from across the country talking about their new development that otherwise would have never heard of it.

As someone who grew up in the area, I’ve never even thought of the suburb name in this way.
It’s just the name of a place. No further meaning than that. The best way I can think of to get my point across visually is it’s not WHITE Settlement but merely whitesettlement.

100% that's where they roam. I lived in white settlement for about 7 years. First house the wife and I bought was there. The gypsies were absolute crooks.
White settlement is mostly low to low middle income housing. Inside the 820 loop is lower income housing and outside the loop is low middle income. The street the wife and I bought on was predominantly white but when I go back to visit a former neighbor, the houses that have sold, are black and the majority of the houses are rentals.
