How old is the kid, and is he/she any good?
I would never contribute to travel ball for kids 8 or younger, because the entire concept of travel ball for that age is insane.
If the kid is 9 or older...
1) 20 percent of the kids might actually be decent ballplayers. I won't straight up give money or do a stupid raffle, but if they have a jambalaya sale, bake sale, car wash, sell something of legit value, I'll go do it. At least I get lunch/snack/clean car out of it.
2) The other 80 percent do it either so mom can post crap on facebook/instagram, because they want someone to pay for their vacations, or because they don't want to play with black people / poor people in rec ball. No way, no how do I support these kids.
I live what I preach. My oldest daughter is very good at dance, but she did not join her dance school's competition team until she was 9 (despite the protests of daughter and wife, no pics of wife).
That competition dance stuff is expensive. They do two fundraisers a year. One is they sell those buy one get one pizza cards for Dominos for $10 each. They are good for an entire year and if you order 2 pizzas at a time, twice a year, it's a good deal. The other fundraiser is they sell these neat scented air freshners that hang from your rear view mirror, in the shape of a fleur-de-lis, they are $5 each and a lot of people buy them as presents for people.
Even with those two fundraisers, that might cover, at most, 10% of the cost of her doing competition dance.

Those that have actually achieved things in their life realize that all of this is supposed to be for fun, physical/social development, and (in the end) isn't very important.
Being on a travel ball team or an AAU team isn't magically going to turn your kid into some D1 stud.
There's kids on the LSU team that started playing football their junior year in HS. KC I think.
You either have the physical tools or you don't. Especially when it comes to making the bigs (which is really the only way a lot of this shite is worth it).
Now, I get that the more time you put into it, the better you'll get. Golf, baseball, basketball, etc.
But honestly, although you are spending time with your kid doing all of this shite... you're still missing out on a lot of the other great things in their lives by making them focus on your passions for your own gratification.
I'm sorry that your sister is an idiot. Maybe one day, she'll wake up and let you rekindle your relationship with your niece.

And it's a certain age before that becomes apparent.
If you play on a travel team with solid coaching (most travel ball teams are daddy ball) it might turn a slightly below average player into an average player.
Now, several of these teams are coached by high school coaches. That might help the kid get onto the high school team that is coached by that guy. But that's it.

Say what you will, there are several women in my life that mourn the end of Sally Foster. It's the only other fundraising product I know of (other than GS cookies) where people would seek out the fundraiser, not vice versa.

At least they're having fundraisers and not panhandling at red lights like the travel basketball teams around here.
I wouldn't mind spending a $5-10 on a plate of food or some raffle tickets to help out, as long as the kids are participating in doing some of the fundraiser work and as long as its not something ridiculous, like $20/ticket raffles to win a Yeti.

It takes a village to raise a kid. You are part of the village. Just do what you can. For me, I would rather just give a little and skip out on the dinner commitment, etc.
