For people born and raised in an area with crappy schools it's a more difficult decision to pull up roots and leave.
What?

Toot have a house note, opens up so many more opportunities in life, especially in the job market.

Catholic schools cost like $7k a yr now.
Don't know when the last time you checked your stats, but I pay much more than that. Plus believe me, if that's the tuition they show on their website, you'll be paying a lot more than that.

Catholic elementary schools are around 6-7K. High schools are more.

I plan on doing something similar for my kids since we’ll be out of LA by the time they’re in elementary.
I’m not paying private school tuition

I think what the poster is saying is if you have family roots in the area it is much harder to leave. So you accept the cost of private school tuition will be necessary for you to remain in the area. If you are someone from another area who moves here with no strong ties to your new home it is very easy to pick up and leave because you don't want to pay for private school.
Hell, I'm in this boat. South Louisiana is my home. My family is here. My kids were born here. My wife is from another state. Her family lives in that sate. She could pick up an leave LA with no issue whatsoever. For me, it would be much more difficult because my family is here.

I use my kiddos savings account at the horse track every weekend.
Hopefully they will have a nice bundle of cash by the time they are 21.

A full ride to SMU for 4 years was probably about that much.
My guess is $30K per semester in actual tuition plus fees, books, etc.
He basically is turning over her college fund to her since he didn’t have to pay anything.

Non Catholic even higher, was paying 16k for lower elementary grade level before we left LA
My dad and his stockbroker talked about this strategy a few years ago. The money spent sending kids to private school being invested in the market starting in the 80s would have netted a nice chunk of change when we went to college
Way more than 275k. Props to the dad in op

My step daughter is a senior in HS and I could stroke check to pay her college costs wherever she went.
But my wife and I have always told her we aren't going to. I will let her use my Post 9/11 GI Bill but the rest is on her.

Wife and I debated 529 account a lot. Like what if the kids gets a full ride and we have to eat the penalties for withdrawing it.
Who cares? The “profit” that your money will make will be used to pay the penalty. You will still get all of your money back and then some. (Knock on wood)

Told my kid that when she graduated college, I’ll pay for a vacation anywhere she wants in the world.

Just a few days ago there was a thread here about lesbian and tranny teachers trying to indoctrinate children that people were pissed about but then when private schools come up some of those same people make fun of it. Weird.
Just imagine coming on here and calling yourself a conservative and not supporting school choice and not sending your kids to private school.
I think it's so funny when people consider themselves so conservative and come here bitching about what's taught in public schools.......yet scream frick that when private comes up.
Imagine sending your kids to public school and being shocked when they teach government is the answer to everything.
It's laughable.

I actually think this is an awesome idea if the parents' can swing it.
If you're saving that money in a 527 then that money has to go somewhere once their finished with academia. If she had scholarships and free tuition all the way through then it's not that hard to save that type of chunk in a 527 over 22 yrs.
