I know this isn’t normal in most social circles but I see this all time time uptown. A majority of our friends were gifted a really nice home once getting married, settling down and starting a family. Rich parents use gifting a house as an incentive to staying in Nola raise a family.

Catholic elementary schools are around 6-7K. High schools are more.

Maybe on paper, but by the time you get done with registration fees, sports, maintenance costs, buses, books, trips, etc. you'll be paying a couple grand more per year.

This is pretty cool. If she takes positive advantage of this that father has propelled his daughter and future grandchildren to financial independence. Debt can cause people to do things and work at jobs they hate. I really hope she uses that gift for good.

I would probably do the same if I was in his shoes. That kid earned it.

Most of the Catholic High Schools in the New Orleans area are in the $10K-12.5K area. I believe the grammar schools are in the $7k-9k range.

Starter home yes, but a second or third home, I would say 275 is on a low end..

Assuming she’s still living in the GNO area, $275k can maybe get you a small condo in a decent area in Metairie. As for Orleans she’ll be lucky to get a place in Gentily for that much, def nothing uptown or WHD. Regardless, $275k is a nice down payment on a new home that most people don’t have.

One of the main reasons we moved out of BR was to get somewhere with good public schools so we didn't have to pay private school tuition. Instead money can go into his 529 plan, we also put all the money he receives from family and from some debts people owed my mother when she passed in there as they come in. Depending where he goes to school our plan is to purchase him a condo our house near the school and he can have roommates that pay some rent to help with the mortgage. When he graduates the house can be his if he wants. Not the exact same thing, but why not start the kid off on a good foot. So long as he doesn't move to Tuscaloosa and become a Bama fan, I think we can swing it.

Works well if you have one kid, however many people have multiple children.

Regardless, good for both of them.

What an amazing dad. Awesome.

My parents split when I was young, and both had a college account for me.

I got a full ride, my Dad got hair plugs, Mom bought a new car.

I got $200 for graduation.

if it was put into a house... not sure there would be any taxes especially if they co-signed.... actually a smart way to do it as it will save a monthly mortgage payment rather than just giving a kid 275 large...

It depends on the kid.
If she is the type that won't piss it away and hold onto it, I think it's a great idea.

If she's likely to go out and buy $10k hand bags and $3500 shoes, then not so much.

We actually found through one of my daugther's golf friends parents the Enlightium Academy which is a Christian based home schooling school. This is in the middle of our second year doing it and was the best decision we ever made for our girls (4th and 6th grade when they started last year).

The platform is so good - they have individual zooms with their teachers for every subject... and the price is so reasonable... we can do all of their golf coaching and personal training etc and it's still less expensive than a private school - and they have more contact with their teachers then they did when they were in public school.. and it's Christian based - none of the nonsense of the public schools either...

In the OP he/she said that the daughter used it to buy a house. That's a pretty responsible use, I think. Obviously depending on where, how much the house costs overall, etc., but not just blowing it on consumer goods.

She didn't save him anything if he paid her that much in the end.
