A team of specialists who investigate cold cases says it has identified the Zodiac Killer, one of America's most prolific serial murderers who terrorized communities in the San Francisco area in the late 1960s with a series of brutal slayings and unsolvable riddles.
quote:
The Case Breakers is now saying it has identified the Zodiac Killer as Gary Francis Poste, who passed away in 2018. The team's years of digging uncovered new forensic evidence and photos from Poste's darkroom. One image features scars on the forehead of Poste that match scars on a sketch of the Zodiac, the team said. Other clues include deciphering letters sent by the Zodiac that revealed him as the killer, said Jen Bucholtz, a former Army counterintelligence agent who works on cold cases. In one note, the letters of Poste's full name were removed to reveal an alternate message, she told Fox News.

You think that feeble-minded simpleton could have pulled off being the Zodiac killer?

Not that I am skeptical, but I am skeptical based on that evidence...

Never once have I seen the Zodiac Killer described with scars on his forehead.
They claim he is the killer of Cherie Jo Bates, based on the letters written at the time, but whoops,
Big nothing story. The mystery will continue.

quote:
The following year, authorities received a handwritten letter that led investigators to believe the killing may be linked to the Zodiac Killer. In 2016, investigators received an anonymous typed letter from someone who admitted to writing the earlier note and said it was a "sick joke." "The author admitted that he was not the Zodiac killer or the killer of Cheri Jo Bates and that he was just looking for attention," the police department said.
Big nothing story. The mystery will continue.

Forgive me for not seeing the point, but this sounds like circumstantial evidence and saying it "ID'd" the Zodiac is a hell of a stretch.
Fox News is really bad at teasing a big break in a case only for the break to be yet more circumstantial evidence. It's almost like they are whoring for viewers.
Edit: It's very likely that many of the Zodiac's cyphers were gibberish meant to mock the police. If you try to make a code-cracking computer decipher those, chances are, like Biblical numerologists, you're going to accidentally stumble upon a sequence of characters that makes some sort of sense.
I'd be very curious as to whether the deciphered cipher was actually anywhere near "Gary F. Poste." Lots of times, these things pull up results that take a stretch of the imagination to acknowledge. Like "grieffost." "Ahh, that must mean 'Gary F. Poste!'"

The code breaking using his full name is a big deal I think. In addition to the scar, I am choosing to believe.

I wonder how Gary Stewart feels?
