No there's more important shite going on versus how people use the phonetic alphabet.

Was on a call at work last week and for some reason I completely drew a blank at C and said “chicken”. The second it came out I had to stifle laughter.

To give recruits more shite to memorize.

The words were chosen to be phonetically dissimilar to each other, so you couldn't mishear over a bad radio connection.

If someone calls for an airstrike on sector B47, but the pilots hears as E47, the wrong people will have a bad day.

Hotel and India are always hardest for me to remember. I was never in the military but had to talk to people all day spelling stuff/account numbers. I prefer zebra for Z.

Funny tidbit.
The Atlanta airport has concourses A through F. The tram announces them using the military radio alphabet ("the next stop is concourse B as in Bravo") for all except concourse D.
For D they use "D as in David" since the radio alphabet for D is Delta, which would lead to some people exiting on concourse D for their Delta flight at gate F12.

I wonder if they started with started with "D as in Delta" then had to change....

I’m retired military and ham radio operator… so it’s stuck with me.

Many times when working distant Ham radio stations (DX) you’ll hear them say Washington instead of whiskey, Yokohama instead Yankee, ocean instead of Oscar….. especially European stations.
