Fast forward another 15 to 20 years and there is, at least for me, an absence of ways to fuel the competive spirit that still resides inside of me. My motivation to do much more than what is required is at an all-time low. My life is pretty much on cruise control at this time: somewhat successful business owner, wife, kids, and a few good friends. I’m content, but still feel like I’m missing something and all I can come up with is that my soul still wants to compete.
Go play some ping pong or something. I've never not wanted to win a game of ping pong at all costs.

Download the Strava app and start cycling and running. You can compare yourself against your friends as well as others and see where you stack up. You'll find yourself pushing yourself to get faster. It's the score keeping and accountability that you're looking for. I used to golf a lot but it just takes way too much time if you want to be good.

Nothing will get the competitive juices flowing like a game of Magic!

What are some ways you guys still feed that primal need to compete?
Honestly life is still one big competition with the arrival of social media.. who has the nicest boat? Biggest house? Most vacations? Who eats at the most expensive restaurant? Who’s got the most perfect family? Who can ‘inspire’ the most people with their stupid fricking motivational speeches? Who can do random nice things for people then post about them for everyone to see?
Short answer:
Golf, overhand softball, and fishing (not really ‘competitive’, but I take it personal when I get shutout

If you live in BR- golden spikes is a adult intramural/ social club.
NO has OTMAC (Over the mountain athletic club)
Gotta find a connection to put you up for either.

Compete against my stamina in work outs
Play golf with slightly better golfers

Become a sports official. Keeps you in the game and in cases such as football, it fills the "Team" void. Plus a little exercise and the competitiveness that comes from wanting to be the best and be assigned state title games. That's how I do it.

Unusual honest OT answer: You could try officiating sports.
I've been officiating Football and Lacrosse for almost a decade now and it's filled the void that was once occupied by competing in sports. I'm still involved in sports, but just in a different way. It's an athletic, paid hobby and my association is like a brotherhood - I've made many many very good friends through officiating. It's one of the things in my life that I'm most passionate about.

I've recently gotten back in the gym and I'm able to run 2 miles now without stopping within a week of starting running again after almost a decade of no exercise. I'm having to tell myself I'm not 20 anymore and pop off a 7-8 mile run with no issues. I stopped smoking cigs about 3 1/2 months ago and I'm shocked at the difference that makes in my cardio
I guess I'm feeding my competitive side now with goals to run certain times without stopping. I will eventually get to running distances and maybe get into some races. Not sure if it will be 5K's, 10ks, or a half marathon. At this point in my life, I'd rather run than heavy lift

In what area of the country do you officiate? I'm in Northeast Florida.

HS athlete with some college basketball offers, but knew I wasn't going further in sports.
Very competitive. Now a triathlete. Great for the midlife crisis competitive drive and allows me to eat and drink almost anything but stay somewhat trim
