Right after WW2, you could buy a brand-new P-38 for $1500... With full fuel tanks.
But without guns.

Here's video (approx. 4 mins.) of the P-51D landing yesterday at Falcon Field in Mesa, AZ. I will admit I got goosebumps. The new owner is going on his first ride in it today as a passenger as he says it will take 3-4 months to learn how to fly it. I will try to get some better video.

The absolute effing GOAT.

My GGF was a navigator on a B17. That very plane and its pilot may have saved his life a time or two.

Looks like an absolute first class restoration. The P-51 is a special aircraft. In what seems like another lifetime, I have couple of hours in the seat. Today, not sure I have enough strength in the the left leg to keep it straight down the runway on takeoff. :-)

Don’t forget “Skins” Fornof. He was the youngest of the Flying Fornof’s Great Fighter pilot!
He brought his dads navy leather jacket into work one day. Instead of the brown sheepskin collar his father had had it replaced with a chinchilla….

This in the Houston area need to check out the CAF out of the West Houston airport. You can pay to ride in some of the open cockpit, vintage planes. I have a bunch of pictures but don’t have time to upload them right now. They’re open every day though and give guided tours and let you even sit in a few of the planes.

If I could afford one I'd love one of the old "Clipper" flying boats that used to cross the Pacific late 30s. Hell of an aircraft.

I still can't decide my favorite warbird fighter...Mustang or Corsair. What a time in aviation history

That is a beautiful restoration.
My uncle flew a P-51 for bomber support missions in Germany during WWII.
Might have flown in the squadron with that very plane.
He absolutely loved that aircraft.

I've never had my hands on one but I've talked with Robin Olds a few times and of all the fighters he ever flew, the P-51 was his favorite

As expected, the cockpit in this thing is tight and the rear seat is even worse.

Cool story: the guy in the second pic flew F-16's in the AF and is currently a pilot for SWA. His 82 year old father in Minnesota flew fighter aircraft in the Marines and still owns two Cessna's. When we were in the hangar yesterday my friend Facetime's his father and said "Dad, I found your next plane ride" and then turned the camera to to the plane. It was inaudible to me but you could hear his dad yell out something like "it's a fricking Mustang!" I know all three of us in that hangar were choked up. His father is ill with cancer but the goal is to get the plane up to MN ASAP to get his dad that plane ride, I hope he fulfills that wish. The plane owner stated yesterday that after he gets his taildragger certification the goal is to never have that backseat unoccupied.
