People will happily turn a blind eye and make excuses for child sex crimes in the name of faith (not much different than politics)

Take up your cross and follow me!

And

“you are in hell because you eat meat on Fridays during lent”

When I was a Catholic kid we couldn’t eat meat any Friday, all year long.
I once forgot it was a Friday and ate some meat, once I realized what I had done I was scared to death I was going to die before I could get to confession since they taught that was a mortal sin.

That’s outrageous that they ever taught that.Nobody is going to hell for eating meat on Fridays.Besides fish, shrimp is meat.

Another thing we were taught it was a mortal sin to touch a communion host, later on they started letting the priest place the host into people’s hands to put in their own mouths.

Then it was frikken raffle tickets we had to sell couple times a year, nun would always pass them out in religion class, never said it but would insinuate that if we didn’t sell them we might not make it to heaven.

When I graduated high school I was done with all their bullshite,,never darkened the doors of a Catholic church again except for funerals or weddings.

Be humble is one of the biggest things I got from my catholic upbringing, even though that isn’t specifically a catholic thing. I feel like I live in crazy world since everyone is the opposite and is all “look at me” 24/7.

For those raised Catholic, what was the number one take-away lesson you got from it?

[quote]

53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.

54 Whoever eats* my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.

55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.

57 Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.

58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Golden rule. I don’t subscribe to turn the other cheek. I prefer the eye for an eye approach.

Related to this, I was taught that how I treat others should not be contingent on how they treat me.

I can’t say I live up to this 100% - I don’t think any human can - but I strive to do so.

I have my issues with the Catholic Church but I also treasure some of the values instilled in me.

When I was raised Catholic, I'll be honest... I didn't take much. That has a lot to do with the time period many of us were brought up in.

That’s funny, my dad talks about when he was growing up in the 80s and early 90s, that they learned absolutely nothing.

Whereas my siblings and I had/have a solid amount of lessons learned and know the faith as well as Catholic converts

That God loves me no matter what. Jesus died on the Cross for me … and for everyone … because God loves us and wants us to be happy with Him for eternity.

I screw up and don’t understand all of the Catechism/Bible/teachings. I don’t understand why Jesus loves that stupid annoying arse hole as much as He loves me - but He does. And if I try my best to get my shite together, go to Confession (which is so difficult), go to Mass as often as possible - then maybe one day I’ll understand the stuff I don’t understand now.

That I don't believe.

But in truth I still live by the 10 commandments, because that is how I was raised.

Our parish never once said you would go to hell for eating meat in Friday’s and I don’t think any of them actually taught that

hey - if that’s all it takes

The Good Thief told Jesus he believed in Him and Jesus said he’d be in paradise too.

So if Confession is what it takes - I’m there - although it’s not the easiest thing. But better than being beat, crowned with thorns, and nailed to a cross.

The minds of children are not developed enough to grasp the complex topic of Theology of any kind.

My culture taught the children The Golden Rule and other simple things that children can understand.

Except I think the golden rule is too easily simplified. And teaching just the Peace and Kindness version of Catholicism does a disservice to the faith and to kids.

I know it did to me.

I think modern culture has twisted Christian ethics enough that it makes it Really hard to see the forest through the trees if all you are taught is "be nice to everyone."
