For those raised Catholic, what was the number one take-away lesson you got from it?

I feel like the thing I remember most is turn the other cheek. I barely remember any of it, though.

Golden rule. I don’t subscribe to turn the other cheek. I prefer the eye for an eye approach.

Guilt. It’s called Catholic Guilt for a reason.

It’s nice to learn as a toddler that you’re going to burn in hell.

“That’s the way god made it” is apparently a perfectly acceptable response to any question you don’t want to answer.

Our borders should be open to any fellow Catholic who wants to move here from another country.

Interesting. Is picking and choosing which parts of Jesus you prefer a tenet of Catholicism as well?

The fire-and-brimstone priest at the Latin Mass of my childhood made accountability feel tangible. Every action had weight, spiritually and in daily life.

Treat others as you wish to be treated. Own your choices. And when you stumble, don’t fear it; seek help and rise again. Godspeed to all.

That whenever you have your best friend stay the night on Saturday and go to church the next day, that he cannot take communion because he’s Methodist

Raised Catholic and went to Catholic school, but never really got much from it tbh. I “went through the motions.” I probably knew as much about Catholicism as a Protestant. Later in life, I went back, but actually studied, paid attention and learned more. I wish I could get those early, formative years back — I probably would have acted and carried myself differently. I look at things with a different perspective now.

Matthew 25 on the basis of final judgment, it’s gonna be how we loved , not how well we followed the 10 commandments

Human frailty is an explanation, not an excuse. If you fall short in how you treat people and want forgiveness, you must be truly regretful and remorseful. Otherwise, you’re using religion as an excuse to worship at your own alter, and your sins remain with you.

Being raised as a Catholic was easy. What was difficult was going to a Jesuit Catholic university, those guys are absolutely fanatical…

That when you sin you cut the rope between God and yourself. But when you repent, show contrition, and go to confession, you tie the rope back with God. And since you had to tie the rope with a knot, you're now closer to God as a part of the process.

When I was raised Catholic, I'll be honest... I didn't take much. That has a lot to do with the time period many of us were brought up in.

Be nice. Jesus is kind. Etc.

What I've learned since really digging in is way different from the faith I knew in school. A lot of truth there that isn't communicated well.
