I think, more than anything, this passage is about our need for God to change our hearts. Everything mentioned is outside of natural human instinct and desire but it's a clear set of commands given to the disciples. Considering the context of the rest of the chapter, that isn't shown, I believe He's calling the disciples to reflect on their own lives and more deeply understand their need for Jesus, even as followers of Him.

This is one of the beauties of being a Christian. The stronger you grow in your own faith you realize how far from Christ and underserving of grace you are, while your love for God and appreciation for his mercy deepens.

He's not calling them to be pacifists. He's calling them to righteousness through a Heart changed by God.

Not treating other people how you think they deserve to be treated, is very hard in today’s world for the Jesus-loving Christian.
But good news, we’re not perfect.
Jesus is.
Progress over perfection.
God just wants us to try.

The loving part is easy. The judging part is tough.

Politics and Christianity cannot be reconciled to one another. In many ways, we require politics BECAUSE no one can be a perfect Christian. If Christianity was followed perfectly we’d have no need for politicians or government.

That’s why any voting I do is with my nose pinched.

You looking for a religious discussion or lesson. There is much more in the bible that must be studied before a comparison can be made.

Start off with render unto Cesar what is Cesar's.....

Perhaps you need a better S.S. teacher. Just those few chapters of Luke has to be broken down to several lessons. Also, the living conditions of that day has to be taken into consideration.

A Christian based archeological mag subscription helps immensely.

Consider judging. People often get one phrase wrong.

We are given the power of discernment and are expected to use it, BUT I've judged no one to hell.

I think in many ways the best political platform IS the Christian worldview and model of justice. Our governmental system is largely built on the book of Deuteronomy.

Also, I'd substitute the word "Righteousness" in place of Christianity because I don't necessarily see Christianity as an action or set of laws. That said, I don't think it's possible to live in a world that achieved righteousness apart from Christ, even theoretically. In a perfectly righteous world, there's no need for Christ, thus no basis for Righteousness. It's a catch 22 because absolute righteousness can only be granted by God Himself, post judgement in His presence.

In the meantime, our political stance as Christians shouldn't be defined by a letter, but by His word, and faith in His sovereignty to see His will done.

Non-Christians like to pretend Christians aren't following the Bible if we don't let everyone run over us while we are giving all of our possessions away, when its actually full of God turning people to dust

Struggling. Not even a full day after hearing the Homily, I’m griping about a local elected official. Extending grace to those who don’t like me or annoy me is a major weakness.

We’re broken and can fall prey to sin. My belief is we get back up and recall that one greater died on the Cross.

Better than I use to. The less I become entangled in this world the freer I become...a lot has to do with expectations-which are a reflection of the heart.

Well put wfallstiger.
I honestly feel like I do not truly "hate" anyone. I do dislike some, do not agree with some and feel sorry for many. I put the whacky left in all three categories. They have to be living a miserable life to hold the hate in their heart they demonstrate.

As you posted, the less in entangled the freer and I feel I have come to understand not to expect much from most of humanity.

The bible also tell us in so many words that we will be disappointed if we put our trust in man.

This is a perfect example of why you can’t take on verse or idea from the gospel and run with it.

Jesus also says; Luke 17:
3 Keep watch on yourselves! 'If your brother does something wrong, rebuke him and, if he is sorry, forgive him.
4 And if he wrongs you seven times a day and seven times comes back to you and says, "I am sorry," you must forgive him.'

IF HE IS SORRY FORGIVE HIM.

You are not bound to forgive an unrepentant evil person.

Big difference between saying "sorry" and being sorry.

What can I say, I'm human and therefore am prone to weakness, especially in this regard.
