re: For those of you who live or have lived in Chicago, what's so great about it?

Anyone with the means to do so is leaving or has already left.

Find it fascinating how different people think and come to their conclusions.
No presumption here. Genuinely curious.
How much of your conclusion DID NOT. come from Twitter? Have you been to Chicago? To many of US top 25 cities?
Not saying Chicago is completely safe by no means.
Just running into lots of people who have concluded that every city in Europe is a “shithole” or Chicago or New Orleans will kill you just for being there. Too often just because Twitter says so.
Trade off value way too high IMO. So much people miss in their lives in so doing.
To each their own.

Just left Chicago. It was clean, service was good and friendly, and the roads were amazing. To go to a fast food restaurant and be greeted by someone that seems happy and knowledgeable was refreshing. Also the deep dish pizza was legit.

Lots of stuff to do. Summers are amazing. Plenty of food.

You somehow had an idyllic Chicago experience without experiencing crime or hardship. 'Well it didn't happen to me, it must not be so bad.'
Then you're suggesting that I'm the one letting my emotions color my take through anecdotal fallacy.
When the numbers on Chicago outmigration and Chicago crime just are what they are. You're one of the people who left Chicago.
None of what I wrote was from Twitter. And the Twitter link I shared is just reporting the insane crime that actually happens in Chicago.

You could replace the word “Chicago” in your statement with any other location, and it would also be true.

All stories I heard
There’s your problem, you can HEAR that about any town. I’ll take it from those on here who know what they are talking about. I’ve been to Chicago to visit my wife’s sister and had no problems and worked just north of Chicago and other than the cold it was fine. Don’t take people who have lived in the bad part of a town’s word for how an entire area is.

Those on here who know what they're talking about when it comes to Chicago? It's an LSU message board.
I'm talking about actual family and friends in Chicago. They don't know what they're talking about?
Every Chicagoan I know has a story of dealing with the crime there.
Even posters here who said positive things about Chicago admit that it's a city in decline. And the numbers just are what they are.

You said you live in the northern suburbs. Nothing but nice areas up there, rich people. Some Chicagoans would say you're not even really in Chicago.
No 'violent' crime, huh? How about non-violent crime?

Sounds like if people leave, well, there you have it. Your case is closed.
Now ask my why I left Chicago (promotion). Perhaps more importantly, ask me where I went (even “deadlier” New Orleans).
Two of best cities in the world! And I have been to / lived in many cities across the U.S. and world.
Encourage you to take a trip to Chicago for yourself and all points beyond your comfort zone. Much life value just may be escaping you.
Or not.

I was there for nearly 8 years. Lived largely North Shore (just N of Wrigley), spent most time between Wrigleyville, Edgewater, Andersonville, Evanston area. It wasn't L.A. and it wasn't D.C. or NY.
Great food everywhere, from everywhere. Incredible architecture, which I really miss, especially on brownstones and old buildings tucked between major thoroughfares. Added real charm even to crappy places.
Fantastic museums, music venues, and generally decent L service made it a great place to be young-ish with some income. I enjoyed being able to walk anywhere and everywhere, from pharmacy to dry cleaners to grocery.
Chicago winters make you appreciate Louisiana summers, and lush green foliage in general.
I only had brushes with crime a few times (stolen car, theft, violence down the block), and really felt pretty safe except the one time I nearly ran out of gas on South Side. Old fella practically escorted me to safety a few blocks north.
As soon as a baby came into the picture it became far less charming. But overall a fine town, and consider it a formative place (hence the name).

The late, great Lewis Grizzard lived there for a time. He wrote a book titled "If I ever get back to Georgia, I'm gonna nail my feet to the ground".
