Didn’t read the whole thread only first few replies.
I am sad to report no one mentioned “your mother” or the availability of international hookers and Peruvian booger sugar.

Lol
To be fair, there's a lot of people on here who believe that and are 100% serious.

Never lived in Chicago, but the food is outstanding. If a good steak is your thing, Chicago rivals any other city.
THIS!! as a Louisiana boy I'm typically underwhelmed by the food many places we travel to and that even with going to recommended spots.
But Chicago is a great food town with endless great options of many different types of food.
Love the different neighborhoods - I try to go see a new one every time I go.
Summers are great, tours down the Chicago River are awesome, and as a Cub fan I love Wrigleyville and Wrigley field and everything about the game day experience there.
Most of the crime is isolated to a certain area on the Southside and I've never been to that area but I'm sure that part of Chicago is not very pleasant. I don't plan to go there.

Just retired. Although not a golfer, plan is Nola from Oct thru Jazz Fest.
May thru Sept (places that will not melt you) rotating Colorado, Chicago, Carolinas)…the lease part of plan.
Sounds like you got it made! Congratulations seriously

I'll probably have to go to Chicago for three days in late March/early April. I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. I like going to places I haven't visited before.
Is Grant Park safe during the day in general? I have a photograph of my grandfather standing next to a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the park from 1942, when he was training during WWII. The statue is still there. I'd like to get a picture of my son and I at the same location.

I’ve been to Chicago once. It was a great experience seeing a Michigan Ave the week before Christmas with all the stores decorated and the snow coming down.
It was absolutely freezing which probably saved my life. We went to a club and got turned around in downtown. Somehow ended up by the greyhound bus station.
We were trying to get back to the interstate (this was before gps) and saw a bunch of car lights on a roadway that looked like it could be the highway. We started that direction. With snow covering the roadway we didn’t even notice the asphalt changing to dirt until we hit the first iced over mud puddle. Trash cans gave way to burn barrels as we went under the interstate. Luckily temps were hovering near 0 and we were able to turn around without getting stuck.
All in all a pretty neat trip.

The Chicago "beach" is cool for a big city but it's nothing like the real beach.
LOL It’s exactly like a real beach. Water is clear and blue, and no salt. Beach is well over a mile long. We used to play beach volleyball down there and I could walk to the courts from my office on the Chicago River. The most public beach volleyball courts of any city in the US.

This is not true. You need to look at a crime map. The West side is really bad and pockets in the north too.

Family NW out town loves the general area but hates Chicago proper. They live about an hour from both Chicago and Milwaukee and seem to prefer Milwaukee

I stand corrected - I can say I've never been subject or experienced anything harrowing in my dozens of times there outside the occasional whino shouting on the subway.

I hated the crime there.
When I was actually watching Portnoy's one-bite pizza reviews, I'll never forget the one where he was in Chicago and a car got jacked right behind him in the footage.

I never lived there but had to be there for work multiple times and have always throughly enjoyed my time there for all the reasons everyone has posted. Im sure winters can is terrible but South La in summer is also..

yep, and when one(or more) of those teams are winning, and going to post season, that whole area, the city and the burbs, is like one big community, fun place to be

Previously worked for a company whose HQ was in the heart of Chicago so went there a lot on business over the years. I don't see the attraction and frankly dislike it there. For mega-cities, I'll take NYC any day over Chicago.

There's a saying, you're not a real Chicagoan until you've been mugged.
That's uh, definitely not something people say. Not sure why you seem to hate Chicago....you seem determined to somehow tell everyone who has been there or lived there that they didn't experience what they know they experienced. Bold strategy, Cotton.
I grew up in the SW burbs and go back often, always spending time in the city each visit. My family loves our visits, except the time we were up there during one of those Polar Vortex deals. The food alone is reason enough to love the city.
