re: For non-smokers/vapers: could you date/marry someone who smokes or vapes?

Hubby smoked when we started dating, but he wouldn't smoke before we went out or when we were together. I told him I wasn't going to demand he quit while we were dating, but that I would not marry a smoker, so if he decided he wanted to marry me, he would have to quit.
So when he did quit, I knew a proposal was forthcoming.
The continued downside is that his sister and mom still smoke and keeping my son away from them when they're smoking (only do it outside) is going to be difficult as he gets older.

I wouldn't date anyone who smoked, period.

Why is that? It is a nasty habit. You can be a straight male and find smoking a huge turnoff.
I smoked for 9 years. Quit cold turkey cause a guy told me straight up that he couldn’t seriously date a smoker.
My husband would have never dated me if I still smoked when we met. I’ve slipped and had a cigarette or two while out with friends when we first started dating. He could smell it on me he next day and would call me out on it.

Zero chance
I can't understand what type of low self-esteem you would need to put up with that level of gross.

No one cares what you think is trashy. Saying something is trash is totally an opinion, so vapers/smokers won't care.
Also if you are going to go talk about something, try to have just a little bit of knowledge. Vaping is WAY healthier than smoking.

I dated a girl a long time ago that smoked socially. It was only at bars or occasionally. Eventually I got her to stop because I harped on her about it endlessly. It is a horrible and nasty habit and ignoring the health effects (which are the worst of the problems long term obviously) it just makes you smell like shite 24/7.

I qualify for that description. I'm a former smoker who now finds it repulsive.

My wife still smokes per a prior post and it kills me when she's getting ready for work in the morning. She showers, washes her hair, puts on nice clothes, does a bit of make-up and sprays a bit of perfume after fixing her hair-----------------then she walks out on the back porch and smokes a cigarette before leaving for work. It's like it's all for naught with that stench clinging to her. I can be 2 rooms away and can often smell her before I hear her when she comes back into the house if windows are open and there's a breeze blowing the right direction

It’s possible, but evidence doesnt show that.

My husband has the nose of a bloodhound. I would go out with friends the night before and smoke a few cigarettes only while out. Come home and shower and wash my hair and wash any clothes I had on the night before.
Within 2 seconds of walking into my apartment he would sniff his nose and be like “you smoked last night didn’t you?”
His sensitive nose helped me from relapsing many times after that

It’s 2018 old man. Most people (male and female) find smoking disgusting.

Trust me, I’m a former smoker and I find it nasty. I know some really good people that smoke though contrary to the beliefs on here. I wouldn’t pass up a good woman just because she smoked. My wife fortunately never smoked and thankfully smoking wasn’t a deal breaker with her b/c I was throwing down 2 packs a day when we met. I think she enjoyed bitching at me for it though b/c she got a lot of practice griping at me for smoking. I finally gave in
I won’t touch a cigarette but will smoke a cigar while hunting still. I go through hell to clean up the smell before I get home.

Not really a fan of kissing an ash tray. Or someone who feels they need to trim the edge off a little every hour.
Vaping's just dumb...

Wut? What's vaping smell like?
Well, it depends upon what they are vaping. No matter what flavor/scent it is, it always smells musty. Kinda like the mix of wintergreen and your great grandma's house!

I would date a social smoker. Heavy pack or two pack a day smoker no way. I smoke cigars myself, cigarettes are disgusting but I'll allow the occasional cigarette.
I once dated a woman who smoked cigarettes occasionally and decided to switch to vaping. Immediately dumped her. While cigarettes might be trashy to some on this board, vaping is an order of magnitude more trashy and retarded. She was so excited when she first got the vaper, some guys at her office turned her on to it while on a smoke break.
Once I saw her with that stupid device and blowing a huge plume I couldn't hit the door fast enough. The chick was okay otherwise, maybe a little needy but vaping is one of the dumbest looking things I've ever scene. It's a deal breaker for me. She switched because she thought it was healthier than cigarettes.
In my mind there is no way smoking and vaping are even comparable. I also lost all respect for DiCaprio when I saw him vaping. It really is ridiculous.
If you've never dated a smoker before, be prepared, that first kiss is nasty. Dated my first smoker about 15 years ago, she was hot and didn't even smoke on the date but when we kissed at the end of the date I wretched. After the first couple of times you don't notice it but my first smoker kiss was disgusting and I was a cigar smoker back then too.
I always wondered if chicks who weren't smokers felt the same way kissing me. I smoke a couple cigars a week. No one has ever commented on it but I do go nuts with the strong toothpaste and mouthwash before dates. I don't know if it stays in your system or what. What is the half-life of nastiness?
On a side note, gauges would right up there with vaping as an instant show stopper.

Even if they did it on rare occasion? How strongly do you dislike it? If you were really into the person and she/he said that it would always be a part of who they were, how would you react?
Edit to add: I don't do either, btw. I smoked one cigarette in 8th grade. It sucked! Lol
I don't like the smell either. I hate the smell of vaping as well, and I really hate the smell of marijuana. All three are a deal breaker if you ask me. I was just curious what others thought.
Thanks!
