Last time I painted I went with the "cashmere" line from SW. Haven't used BM to compare but I like with SW product better than the stuff from Lowes I'd used previously.
To me the biggest difference was long-term durability and ease of cleaning. Both of which were solid with the SW stuff.

When in a big box store, ask the paint department if one of the paint reps are around. Say you are at Lowes, you will most likely catch either the Olympic or Valspar rep passing through the store. They are the ones that actually train the employees (or try to at least) they will do in store seminars of feux finishes and stuff like that. They will be the most knowledgeable people in the store.

Sherwin Williams is good. What's makes the difference is brushes and rollers. Spend less on paint and more on some good brushes and rollers.

I personally prefer Valspar and Behr to Sherwin Williams. SW always seems lower quality and requires more coats. It's convenient and reliable and I have a commercial account with them so I get a discount, but I still prefer other two.

Just finished painting every surface of a house we remodeled. Used the top of the line SW paint in several rooms and top of the line Home Depot paint. The Behr was better paint. Took up to 4 coats on the SW we rolled. Out of a pro spray rig we got one coat coverage. With the Behr it only two coats. I'll never buy SW paint again.
Exact same with me. I've done almost every wall the past year, most with SW, and the Behr was much better.

I will say 95% of paint jobs that people aren't completely satisfied about is because the prep work wasn't done. Clean your walls people before you paint. If you paint over dirt then you might have issues. But decent brushes and the right tools. Take the time to tape properly.

They use the same machines as paint stores
I will add, however, that my wife got 25 gallons of paint from Sherwin Williams in Denham, and went to another location later to get 1 more gallon of a color we'd been using. The employee asked her if she got the other paint from that location. She said no, and the guy warned her that each machine is calibrated a little differently.
Sure enough, the new paint she brought home was just a hair lighter, enough to be noticeable on the touch-ups we did.
Also, having used 25+ gallons of Sherwin Williams paint and 3 gallons of the cheap Olympic during post-flood renovations, I should've just stuck with Lowes/HD paint to save $10+ a gallon.

You're a Dr now?

Id prefer to pay a little more there and have someone that is knowledgeable instead of dealing with some asshat at a lowes or home depot that knows nothing.
I wouldn't trust anyone at Home Depot for painting anything more important than the inside of my trash cans. I swear, Home Depot is one step above Walmart when it comes to employee knowledge.

I am in the process of painting the entire inside of my home and have been using the Glidden brand from Home Depot. I haven't had the first issue. I think it is key to have a good primer. I would say I have been happy with the turnout so far. I have learned that painting ceilings is for the birds though.

Products aren't the problem. Its the employees. You should hope that you don't need to go back for another can to do any spot painting. At that point you should probably change colors completely.

Well, i'll knock on wood and consider myself lucky. I have gone back several times for another gallon of paint and I haven't had the first issue with paint matching.

Consolidation in the paint industry is going to have the consumer screwed for years to come.

I use my painters account at Sherwin Williams and get their basic stuff for $14 a gallon.

If you are planning on redoing the floor coverings then rent/borrow an industrial spray rig. Can do a couple thousand sq feet in a few hours.

What is their basic stuff? We were planning on going with SW Pro Mar 200 paint and probably Zinsser 123 primer.

Picked up 3 gallons of paint at the Sherwin Williams 40 % off sale.
A single 5 gallon pail of SW paint with 40% off is probably cheaper than 3 single gallons with same discount.

That is incredibly inexpensive. But I have kids and need something that is somewhat durable and can be wiped off if need be. I suspect the $14 gallon paint won't allow me to do that or last as long?

I honestly don't know. I've had the same painter for years and it's whatever he uses. I give him the SW # and the finish I want. I assume it's whatever Sherwin Williams call their "builder grade". I've never had any complaints.
